Bracing a Built-In Desk?
When we renovated our apartment, we turned a closet into a small home office. We went low end and created a built-in desk out of formica. It's been a few years since the renovation, and I want to brace the desk a little better, but I'm not sure how.
I think I want some sort of brace that goes from the wall (under the desk) to the underneath part of the desk. However, I don't know what this would be called. Any suggestions?
thx.

does the desk span the entire length of the closet - from wall to wall? if so that prob means it's sitting on ledger boards that are screwed into the closet walls. you can brace the desk by attaching a cross bar into the ledger boards. depending on what kind of leg room you have you might be able to get away w a 2x4.

do you mean a bracket? something simple like an L-shaped piece of metal? be sure to screw it into the wall studs, not just sheetrock.

If you use a piece of wood, it might be called a cleat. More likely you are looking for a piece of metal called an angle bracket; the hardware stores have them and they are often made by Stanley.

I would HIGHLY recommend the metal standards from this site: atlaseast.com. Cheap at 4x the price, will last until through your grandkid's lifetime, and comes with wall-mounting hardware at a small extra cost.
Check with JCBStoner for reccs.
