to strip or not to strip
I have a wooden bannister that seems to be stained and then finished with a shellac. some of the spindles are new and are unpainted, and the post are painted with a flood paint. I don't want to strip the whole bannister, but if I sand it and put a primer coat on it can I then paint it with an oil based paint?

You can certainly sand it, prime it & paint it but I wouldn't. I'd sand it, stain it and seal it with either a shellac or a polyurethane.
Why do you prefer to paint it???

Well sometimes painting the whole rail looks nice, but i do agree the i would perform better with a stain and clear coat, it wouldn't show dirt and finger prints as much. Would look pretty sweet too.

I just thought if I stained it I would have to take it down to the raw wood, which is a big job.
I would prefer staining it too, but thought that just roughing up the existing stain wouldn't be enough.

Maybe try sanding some of the shellac - not all. Then, use an alcohol based sanding sealer to seal it. The alcohol based sealer with adhere to the shellac. Sand that lightly, and then use an oil base poly tinted with a dye stain. I am not talking about polyshades which I do my best not to ever use, but real poly with a Mohawk Dye Stain. Dye Stains are compatible with the poly and are available in many colors.
