Refrigerator Repair/Replacement?
Ourtenant just left a message that the refrigerator in her apartment isn't cold anymore. I'll take a look - but can anyone recommend a reliable refrigerator repair outfit?
Also - if I need to get a replacement, any recommendations on brands and where to get it? I was thinking P.C. Richard or Sears. Thanks!

I am not fond of the throwaway mentality, so I hate to say it: a repair is likely
to cost you half the price of a new refrigerator. Unless the refrigerator is new, a current EnergyStar-rated appliance will be more efficient than your older model. He is located in Jersey, does not charge sales tax and has free delivery. On most items they have next day delivery. They alway beat the prices of the local places by a few dollars.
It seems that most new low price refridges do a decent job. It you are concerned, get one that is Energy Star rated.

If it's not the compressor, it's probably just a fan & you can easily replace that yourself for about $15.

Could be the tenant punctured the gas line in de-icing the freezer, I did that once way back in my bitter renter days...

We've found AJ Madison to be cheaper and quick with delivery, etc, for appliance purchases...

I never thought I'd feel this way about an appliance but I LOVE my refrigerator. It's a Conserv that I bought used in 2001. Several competitors have come out with a similar model - just be sure it's the height you want. As a landlord who has been replacing and sometimes fixing refrigerators for years, I suggest buying a new one too if it's in the $500 range or less. After the service call fee and the parts fee, you're likely talking a couple hundred bucks at a minimum, and something else usually goes wrong within a year, in my experience.
I ordered a couple refrigerators online recently from Home Depot and had no problems. They were running a free delivery promotion too -- though I'm not sure it's still going on. The delivery guys were much nicer than the guys from PC Richards who rush out so fast, you don't have time to check the appliances thoroughly for damage.
If your getting a mid-refrigerator, I'd recommend GE over Avanti, and I'd stay away from Summit if possible too.
