Pesky window bars
I just moved to a ground floor apartment with bars on the windows--except for a large rectangular portion at waist-level where the air conditioning unit sticks out. I've asked a few locksmiths and they've quoted me $400-500 to weld additional bars over and around the A/C unit.
Does anyone know of a decent locksmith who would do this for less? Or are there more creative ways of solving this peace-of-mind/security issue? I would love some new ideas!

You don't want a locksmith you want an iron guy. Don't have any in mind but search the archives.

Where do you live? If it's east NY, you need iron bars. It's not necessary in most of the city.

I've got a decent/inexpensive iron guy. Nothing fancy, but he's reliable. Email me, if you want his #. Don't want to post his cell online. infoATreclaimedhomeDOTcome

Locksmiths only carry stock window bars and they just screw them into window frames.
Previous posters are right that you should get an iron guy, but I doubt you can get the job done for less than $300, but you never know.
I know there are some cheap Chinese iron guys, but I don't have their numbers. Go down to Chinatown and ask around. . .

If this is simply welding bars - without any creative bends, I can do it for a reasonable price.
