Just Moved to Bay Ridge

Okay so I just moved down to Bay Ridge 2 weeks ago. Mid 70's + 3rd Ave vicinity. Looking to hear from any of my new neighbors about which is the best deli, dry cleaner, tailor, take out, hardware store, etc etc in the area. Also, which restaurants are a must? There is so much stuff down here, I would love to weed out the crap. Thanks!

Good luck. There are some good choices for all of those things.

SKIP the Salty Dog all together. For a beer and the game go down to Yellowhook Grille, where the food isn't anything to speak of, but the crowd is more reasonable, the bartenders are great and they have outdoor seating. People also like the burgers at Skinflints on 79th and 5th.

Just about everyone has a different opinion on pizza places, but it sounds like you are very close to Vesuvio. It's excellent for pizza if you ask me. Used to be a regular old slice-type place and they added a restaurant in the back, which is decent for pasta/chicken parm type stuff.

Deli? I think I wind up at Bagel Boy on 80th and 3rd for sandwich or bagel, but that's matter of some dispute too.

If you like Greek food, I consider Elia (3rd Ave b/t 86-87th Sts.) a must. Great food and service. Warning: no place in Bay Ridge has a great wine list.

Try Paneantico on 91st and 3rd for a huge Italian sandwich with home made bread. Pricey, but very good. Good pastries there too; same people as Royal Crown.

I have no strong feelings about dry cleaners. Everyone seems to use a different place.

I'm sure you could get different answers as to all those categories.

Shopping for home goods (sheets, towels, etc.)...go to Century 21 on 86th Street between 4th and 5th aves. The home section of the store is actually on 87th directly behind the clothing part. It is far superior to it's lower Manhattan counterpart. Good selection, great prices, but stay away from there on a Saturday afternoon or be prepared for super long lines and getting run over by aggressive women with baby carriages :)

Tanoreen - Middle eastern food 77th and 3rd
Robicellis - organic gourmet deli 86th and 3rd
Nouvelle -Sushi 88th and 3rd
Groceries - Associated 79th and 3rd and the Green Market 3rd and 95th on Saturdays.
Yoga - Bay Ridge Bikram - 5th and 83rd
Italian - zio Toto 83rd and 3rd

I could go on and on. I moved here 4 years ago and found my favorite places just by trying them.

"Warning: no place in Bay Ridge has a great wine list."

Try Petit Oven on Bay Ridge Ave (69th St) between 3rd and Ridge for a great wine list and seasonal tasting menu (French/nouveau American cuisine).

For pizza, I like Peppino's at 77th and 3rd Ave.

Beer and burgers, I like Yellow Hook grill as mentioned above, but I don't mind Salty Dog either (during the day/early evening it's better than late night).

Dry cleaner there's a little place I go to on 74th St between 3rd and 4th ave (closer to 3rd) that is cheap (relatively) and good. Name escapes me.

For a great tailor go to Alexandria on 68th between 3rd and Ridge. Little old greek lady who is extremely skilled and very reasonably priced (she did an amazing job on my wedding dress in only 2 fittings for $80, everyone else started at $350).

"Fancy" sushi I like Dish on 3rd Ave in the low 90s. It has a great little seating area in the back. For all you can eat sushi, I like Bay Ridge Sushi on 3rd and 68th. This place gets mixed reviews but I think it's great, fish is always fresh and the rice is nicely seasoned.

Weekend brunch I like Saint Germain on 3rd Ave around 83rd St.

Correction: Alexandria is on Bay Ridge Ave (69th St) not 68th. Enjoy the new neighborhood. I moved to Bay Ridge 2 years ago and really love it.

Wow, thank you everyone for some great info. Keep it coming!

What about good quality produce? The Food City by my place is shockingly poor, and the cheap veggie store across the street is dissapointing too.

Check out the 2 produce stands on the corner of 77th and 5th Ave. They are way better than that one on 3rd you're talking about. Also there is a fish monger next door to them, between 76th and 77th on 5th, that I like for fresh fish and shrimp.

I go to 79&3 Associated Market for good produce. They also have good Taekwandoo school for kids.

If you are looking for cheap produce or good sea food - cross the highway into the Sunset park and look at any Chinese store.

There is also good fish store at 5th ave and 76th street.

Don't forget the Green Market on Saturdays for Produce.

I live in the high 80’s so can’t help with local deli’s, dry cleaners, etc, but have eaten out a lot all over the neighborhood. The food here is really very good. Here is a short list of places you should check out. I tried to limit to 1 or two per cuisine, so there are plenty I’ve left off…

Pub food - Kettle Black - 87th & 3rd
Traditional American - 101 - 101st & 4th
Steakhouse - Austins - 89th & 5th
Brunch - St Germain - 83rd & 3rd; Cebu - 88th & 3rd
Middle Eastern - Tanoreen - 77th & 3rd;
First Oasis – 92nd & 4th; Family Store - 68th & 3rd – for takeout. Go back often – always something different, everything is great.
Greek - Elia – 86th & 3rd; Agnanti Meze - 78th & 5th
Italian - Zio Toto – 84th & 3rd; Tuscany Grill - 87th & 3rd
Thai - Bangkok Tokyo - 84th & 3rd; My Thai - 79th & 3rd.
Sushi - Nouvelle - 87th & 3rd ; Dish - 92nd & 3rd.
Chinese - Grand Sichuan House – 87th & 5th
Vietnamese - Pho Hai - 86th and 4th
Korean - Kimchee – 93rd & 4th
Mexican – Los Politos – 73rd & 3rd
French – Petit Oven – Bay Ridge Ave b/w 3rd & Ridge

There are pizzerias almost every other block, and every one I’ve been to has been really good. For other than your typical slice joint try Peppinos on 77th & 3rd which has great brick oven, Zio Toto for wood burning, Del Gorso’s on 71st & 3rd has a whole wheat pie if you’re into that.

Welcome to the neighborhood!
Its kind of addictive - once you get used to it you may never want to leave. The only real downside is the long ride to Manhattan. We find the neighbors down-to-earth and really friendly.

For shopping - ditto most of the above suggestions. Double ditto on Family Store - there are a million choices for middle-eastern food - but their take on it is much more sophisticated and the people are super pleasant.

You were complaining about produce - if you have access to a car - check out the two mega-produce marts - Three Guys from Brooklyn on the corner of 65th St and Fort Hamilton Pkwy, and Circus Fruits on the corner of 60th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway. They are both 24 hrs and have excellent produce at a fraction of the prices you'll pay close to home. For local produce - agree with previous poster - check out the two stores at 77th and 5th.

Also - coming very soon is a brand new Key Food on Bay Ridge Ave. (69th St) between Third and Ridge - a few steps down from Petite Oven. It hopefully will open in September.

I dunno about the Century 21 thing. Just my own cranky take on it. Everything you say is true, but I can't stand it in there, I feel the essence of my soul being sucked out (same as in similar places wherever they are). I love Bay Ridge, but a spell in C21 is almost enough to ruin my day in the neighborhood : ) but a run to any of the mentioned restaurants places could save it!! : )

I have never had a less than great food experience in any Bay Ridge place I decided to try. Does a less than very good pizza even exist there? And the recommendations here for the favorite ones will send you to heaven.
