Iron Grating

Hello. I am in the process of scraping off old old paint on our decorative townhouse window grates and outside fence. I plan on repainting. Is there an easier way? Some sort of solvent that won't harm the iron...or am i doing this correctly? Thanks for the input!

You really do not need to remove all paint - just the loose and covering rust parts.
I found the angle grinder with wire attachment very effective on metal fence especially to remove rust.
You also can try paint stripper. Lawe's sells paint stripper in spray cans which dispenses as foam. This works well on vertical bars. Wear rubber gloves, when handling stripper and eye protection when working with grinder.

denaturalized alcohol will remove paint...but just get off the loose stuff and then prime and paint.

after getting the paint off, use a good primer - even a rusty metal primer and a good oil base enamel over that (I use Rustoleum but Ben Moore has a good product as well as Ox-line). the combination of the two will far outlast paint alone.

It's a long and messy chore, but I would highly recommend removing all the paint before priming and repainting. That's what I did with my cast iron fence and the final appearance, devoid of all the uneveness inherent in painting over unstripped iron that has had portions of paint fall off over the years, made it all worthwhile. I used a blowtorch and a scraper, for the most part, resorting to Peelaway for only the more intricate newel posts.
