IKEA Kitchen

If it seems to good to be true- Blog first. Anyone have and experience with IKEA kitchen installation- longevity- etc.?

Comments

I personally haven't but wish I did since I got a cheapo kitchen for around the same price as IKEA and have been regretting it ever since. 2 friends got one recently and love it and a friend of mine put one in about 5 years ago and is very happy. I did hear that the ones they made when IKEA first came to U.S. were poorly done so don't go by those that had it installed 10+ years ago since the product is totally different now.

They looks good for the money. Only the doors are solid wood, not the cabinets themselves.

I'd personally use an independent contractor, but that's just me. Why pay a premium?

I've never had Ikea install anything.

And to be honest, the countertop material and proper installation is the most important factor. As long as water doesn't permeate your cabinets, particle board or mdf is fine.

Get a solid surface countertop like Ceasar Stone, granite, or marble, and you'll be fine. . .

We renovated using all Ikea cabinets and splurged on nice countertops, tiles and appliances. It looks great after 3 years. We love it. We had www.traemand.com rip out and install all the Ikea cabinetry (recommended Ikea installers) they were very professional and done in 2.5 days and hauled away our old kitchen.

Over the years, I have installed five IKEA kitchens. I even used their source for the countertops (several different surfaces) and they have always been delivered just perfectly measured and made. The kitchens have held up very well, and people love the way they look. My current kitchen is about five years old and still looks good and works well.

BTW, I mix IKEA cabinets with high-end appliances, lights, sinks, faucets, etc.

We've installed two Ikea kitchens, in an office space, and in a weekend house that sees heavy rental activity in summer. Both have held up well over the past seven years. The cabinets are all solid.

Good advice to opt for a quality countertop. We had a countertop of Ikea butcherblock in one of the kitchens, and it's starting to split near the sink. But that's after seven years of summer renters.

Big fan of ikea kitchen cabinets. Did one in the rental and wish we'd saved the time and aggravation of going fancy with our own and waiting through endless delays. Whomever you use, make sure they've done one before and know how to do it. Much better than anything double the price at HD or Lowe's. Talk to your contractor about how to deal with measuring.

also like our IKEA cabinets at weekend house. Just bought some more for a wet bar area we are making (we are pissed at them for order notication problem but that is other issue).
Big plus is that if you get tired of look you bought in few years ...just buy new doors in another style...they will fit onto existing cabinets. For the price can't go wrong.
And easy enough to assemble yourself.

I think Dylanfan is right on. We used high-end appliances and tile with Ikea, and it looks great. Our contractor installed, but next time I would do it myself (we assembled the cab bases).

The caveat about Ikea is that it doesn't look like anything BUT Ikea (this is either a good thing or a bad thing). Durability sort of depends how you use it (we have 2 kids who like to bang on things) but if the doors get chipped replacements are cheap.

You'll also have to do all the ordering/purchasing yourself (It took me four trips to Paramus for our kitchen).

I love my ikea kitchen, going on 2 years and it has held up really well. Very easy to install, we did it ourselves.

When we did a major renovation on our main kitchen last year, we were able to create a low-budget, good-looking rental kitchen by repurposing our Ikea cabs. Considering that those cabs (orignally installed by Traemand) survived a few years of daily use in one kitchen, then were removed and reinstalled (by a handyman) for use in another kitchen, and are still looking great, I think that says a lot about the quality of the product. I also agree with Kensingtonian that Ikea's rep in cabinetry, for good reason, has improved significantly over the years. Plus, their product is backed by a 25 year limited warranty.

My IKEA kitchen is 9 yrs old and no signs of wear. Nowadays they use formaldehyde-free particle board (which is the only objection, imo, to pb). Their hinges and hardware are top-class. Drawers by the way, which typically fall apart in low-end stapled-together brands, are metal and can stand a truck.

If you go to the top of the line, the doors are real wood. Put some fancy pulls and you'd fool many.

The Ikea installer Traemand has a website. it is self explanatory. They accept all credit cards.

We love our Ikea kitchen. Still looks great after 4 years. The installation needs to be done right. We loved our contractor and he had done quite a few Ikea cabinet installations so we felt confident with him. We had met with Traemand and one of the other installers that had cards at Ikea (don't recall the other co'd name), but weren't impressed with either of them at any point in the process. Neither company seemed really equipped or qualified to do a full kitchen reno either and we wanted to deal with the same contractor for the whole job. Ultimately we went with a contractor that a friend of a friend recommended and we were very pleased.

I can reiterate everything above. 9 months in I really like the Ikea cabinets we installed. Look good, work great. We went with separate granite counters and some appliances.

I did buy some other items (faucet & sink) from Ikea as well. I am less happy with the faucet and wish I had bought it elsewhere. Pretty easy to fix but just a reinforcement of the advice stated by others to buy higher end appliances, hardware, etc from one who didn't take it.

Good Morning Dear, I am a contractor who had recently installed an Ikea Kitchen cabinets and I got to say that they are really good, I like the fact that there is al 2" metal track mounted into wall first, witch gives you stability and holds more weight, The reason is cause is mounted with Lead bolts and Toggle bolts and is easy to put toghether, Make sure you use Liquid PL-100 glue, Good luck, if you need any help or advice you can call me at 347 234-3597
