Donate Aluminum Cans

Hi all,
Is there an non-profit agency that accepts aluminum can donations as a tax write-off? I can't deal with the neighborhood redemption centers. They are too nasty and the lines are too long.

Yea, It's called the City of New York. A tax write-off? Consider it your civic duty. You'll sleep better tonight.

Put your cans in a shopping bag and hang it from the gate in front of your house. There are plenty of people collecting cans who'll be happy to retrieve them without having to go through the trash.

Vinca, that's that what people are doing with those bags out o recycling night? I've seen that in the neighborhood and I couldn't figure it out. Thank you!

They're called "can farmers".

There is curbside recycling in NYC on a weekly basis.

If you wish to recoup your deposit, you must go to a redemption center (supermarket).

To have itemized deduction you will need to spend ~$1000. Which translates into 20000 $0.05 cans. Do you produce 50 cans/day?

If yes, you should consider side effects of drinking from aluminum cans. Beverages are not ph neutral and dissolve aluminum, which settle in your brain and could contribute to Alzheimer.

Last I knew, the tax code doesn't include donations of aluminum cans, but you might want to ask your accountant. If you want to make a "donation," leave the cans outside, like other people said, or drop them off at a redemption center. If you want the deposit but are too lazy to redeem the cans, that's another story. If you're willing to accept a percentage, I suppose you could "hire" a homeless person to do it for you, at, say, 2 cents per 5 cents redemption. So you have some options!
