When to Say Goodbye

My current living situation is this: I rent a (Old Converted SRO) 2 bedroom apt in Park Slope from wonderful landlords. Problem is the house is very old, very cold in the winter and getting crowded with the addition of my toddler. We rent month to month at 2000 per (low considering where we live)It's time to move. How much notice should you give your landlords before you move out? I certainly want to give them enough time to do what they need to do to show to potential renters.

No lease?

30 days would be a minimum, but if you have a great relationship, you could do 60 days. Then again the relationship could go south in a minute :-)

If it's going to come as a shock to them I'd do it a.s.a.p. since they are unprepared for it. If you have a lease there's probably a guide of some kind but you say you've been friends so earlier is better.

Yeah, if you guys are on good terms, let them know as soon as possible. they may want to plan some renovations, and they can start looking around for new tenants. It may benefit you, also, in that maybe they'll let you pay rent for part of the month so they can do some work and get new people in on the first of the month. that's what I did when my tenants just left.

Why would you hesitate to communicate with landlords you've described as wonderful? Have you figured out your own preferred timeframe? I'm sure your landlords, once they're aware of your desire to move, would have their own preferred timeframe. Do you have friends who might want your apartment, that you can refer to the landlord? Communicating directly and honestly, so that preferences of both parties can be met to greatest extent possible, seems the best route.

Tell 'em you're looking and will give them 30 days upon a lease agreement. It's likely to take you some time to find or choose what you want.

just say hey we need more space and we need to move how much notice do you want. sometimes the simplest approach is best.
