Stripper for wood paneling?
The good news is I found what appears to be mahogany wood paneling (floor to ceiling) in my dining room.
The bad news is that it's covered in several layers of paint, including at least one lead paint layer.
It's a large room and I wonder if it would cost more to strip it than replace it.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a professional service that can do this kind of work?
Thanks.

I can guarantee that if you want to use mahogany, it will be cheaper to strip it. If you want to rip it out and go with boring old poplar baseboards only, it will be cheaper to do that.
If you're lucky, the paneling originally had shellac on it, so a heat gun will take off 90% of the paint right away.
Can't help you on the recommendation as I have always stripped my own wood, so to speak.

If it's mahogany, then the panelling most likely originally had shellac on it. Otherwise they would have used something cheaper that wasn't meant to show.

I would recommend Joe Salem who has done a large amount stripping and staining at my house.

By all means keep it! Aside from other reasons given, you can't even get the same kind of mahogany nowadays, what we use today comes from a different place, and is a different species, and is not as rich and dense as old mahogany.
If you do have shellac as the layer closest to the wood, it shouldn't be that hard to remove the other layers of paint, and the shellac should have prevented the paint pigments from being absorbed by the wood.

New mahogany paneling is upwards of $100/square foot. Depending on how it is fastened, it may be advisable to remove it and strip it off-site and then re-install.
