Recessed cabinet between studs
We want to build a recessed cabinet between studs.
Please tell me I don't need a permit to cut holes in drywall?
The only reason why I would think you *might* is that I am effectively ripping out dryway, which has some fire retardation qualities, and replacing it with a wooden cabinet. Presumably if you re-sheated all your walls with wood, not dry wall, the DOB would not be happy.
My cabinet would be around 3 feet wide, and 10 feet tall.

Although many posters will tell you that technically you need a permit for just about everything, the reality is that a fair amount of MAJOR work gets done in homes throughout Brooklyn without permits. As long as you properly bag your debris and don't have a pile of drywall out front, don't worry. Many houses get complete renovations without permits. Maybe not so much anymore nowadays with the DOB on the prowl looking to issue fines.
That said, if this is a load bearing wall I'd put up two jack studs and a header where you're going to install this rather large cabinet.

I'll assume you are not removing drywall from wall you share with a neighboring apartment - and just interior wall within your apt. (or house).
Then do what you want.

you certainly do not need a permit for that. That's cosmetic work. That assumes what dibs said about load bearing, and what pete said about an apt.
