Copied from open thread, in case you didn't see it:

Kens, I took the NHS home improvement course, way back in the late 90's. It was great. I knew some of the stuff, like how to measure, which end of the hammer pounds the nails, etc, but learned how to frame walls, hang sheetrock, mud the rock, do basic tiling, painting, replace a toilet, hang a door, rip plywood and moulding. We also got to use expensive power tools that I haven't been able to afford to touch since, but still want.

Most importantly, we learned to toss around phrases like "mud the walls" and "rip the boards" so we could sound knowledgeable to contractors we hire. For many of the women in the group, this was an important thing. I know I had fun going into places like Sid's Hardware, on Jay St, where most of the employees are from countries where women don't come out of the house without chaperones, and tell some condescending salesperson exactly what I needed, and how I was going to use it. Priceless.

I digress. If you don't know alot about construction and hom repair, it's worth it to take the course. It's also a lot of fun, as the other students were characters in their own right.

They sound like good classes!

Has anyone ever taken the first time home buyers seminar? They mentioned on the phone that they would set you up with a counselor who can help you determine how much you can afford. (They did not mention if there was a cost for this service.)
Any input would be great!

This sounds great. What is NHS and how do I find out about their classes?

NHS stands for "Neighborhood Housing Services". They hold seimars in home buying and offer classes in home maintenance in the off-season (late fall and winter) in Bed-Stuy and East Flatbush. They're the real deal.

Hubby and I took Home Maintenance classes this past year at the East Flatbush location:

Best $150 (per person) we ever spent. The instructor was knowledgeable and patient, and the class has a fun vibe. You work hard and get braver. One tip the instructor taught us is that any contractor who isn't proud to have you watch him(her) work is probably taking shortcuts you don't want.

Thanks Gale, I am thinking of registering for the fall class and your comment is very helpful.

I've taken both home maintenance (1st and advanced level) courses at the East Flatbush location and loved them both, the instructor and my classmates. It was fun, I learned a lot, refreshed myself on things I'd done before but long ago....etc. Worth many times more than the class fee!
Have fun!

Thanks honeycut! I plan to take both.

Argentina - seriously? That my screen name is Montrose Morris? Or that I took the course? What's the problem?

To answer you question, the seminars are free. The homebuying counseling session fee is $150. Remember the counseling and payment is split into two parts: $50 for one-on-one initial counseling session and $100 for the homebuyers educational course. If you have any further questions, please contact me: 718-469-4679. Thank you.
