Hancock at Troop and Tompkins?
Would anyone have any thoughts on this section of Bed-Stuy? How safe and quiet and close to transportation it is?
Comments
The architecture gods of Bed Stuy stopped at Throop, but this block is a good Bed Stuy block, forever ruined by not being the block before it. That said, there are some nice properties here, and you are still close enough to the subway at Nostrand/Fulton, as well as the banking and shopping at Restoration. You are also a block closer to Peaches and Saraghina and the other amenities in Stuy Hts. I used to live a block away on Jefferson, and this block was pretty quiet. Depending on which end of the block you are on, you are a bit closer to the C stop at Kingston/Throop, but only another 5 or so minutes longer walk to the A at Nostrand. This is still in prime Bed Stuy, so a fair priced home will only be more valuable in the future. This area will eventually be landmarked, too.

I live on Marcy between Jefferson and Putnam, so only a few blocks away. Hancock is lovely on that block, but I would check it out at various different times--like Saturday night to see what it's like--some blocks are rowdier than others but in general it's a wonderful area. My 13-year-old daughter takes the subway to and from school and various activities and has never had a problem on the street before and after. It is definitely worth a look, imho.

I would second MS. Montrose's comments. You also have shops on Tompkins, but the banks, supermarket, delis and other stores are on Fulton which is very close.
In addition to the A and C trains, the B26 bus runs along Halsey - one block to the south of Hancock. It takes you to Clinton Hill, Ft Greene and Downtown heading west and to the J train on Broadway or the L train if you head east.
There is a firehouse on Hancock just west of Lewis - 2 blocks away. You may hear fire engines at all hours but I live near the station and I don't notice it.

OK, I did an extra around-the-block on my way home from work and checked out the block. It's a swoon-worthy brownstone block except for the last quarter or so on the south side of the street, and although the houses there are fugly, they are not disastrous. Unfortunately the shops on Tompkins are not such a great attraction except for a fabulous laundromat and a wonderful hole-in-the-wall dress shop called Calabash; also ok are a new modern-furniture shop and a junque-and-antique refinishing place. There are signs indicating a West Indian restaurant to come, but I have seen no steps toward its creation for at least 6 months. Unfortunately the restaurant on the corner, Brooks Valley, is no more. But it's a nice block with a bus line on Tompkins and Throop, and Fulton St. just a few blocks away--Foodtown is right there.
