Fire Escape Removal
I've got a question about fire escape removal. If a house was a 4-family and the C of O was legally changed to a 2 family and you want to tear down the fire escape on the back, are you required to get a permit or sign-off from the city? The rental is on the bottom floor with an owner triplex above.

Yes you will need a permit to remove the fire escape and repair the wall. It should not be a difficult permit to obtain if your new C of O is in place and if you demonstate that you garden apartment has operable grilles that swing out in case of a fire.

Curious...does it come down in pieces? Is it salvageable after removal? We have been considering adding one to our rear wall. Havent put much thought into it cuz not sure what's involved but maybe we'd be interested in taking it off OP's hands if and when you decide...

You need a permit from the DOB to fart in NYC.

mcteague--we removed our fire escape some years ago and thought we could sell it. We were told by an architect that fire escapes cannot be re-used--apparently a DOB violation. We didn't verify this as it was pretty beat up anyway, but you might want to check.
