the one in that Atlantic Mall is pretty decent. of course, going when it opens is best - ie first in line is fastest

I've always gone to the DMV at Herald Square and haven't found it to be too awful (for a DMV, that is).

When I moved to Brooklyn, someone advised me against going to the DMV at Atlantic Center (and I took their advice so I've never been).

I'd avoid going on a Monday or the right at the end of the month.

I second the vote for the Atlantic Mall--but try to go before it opens if you can, as the line forms early. Moves reasonably quickly and I found it pretty efficient for a DMV. (But still bring something to read for the wait. :)

Coney Island. You take a number and have a seat - rather than stand in line.

Of course Staten Island is the quickest!

Manhattan. Fewer drivers. Less attitude.

I found a ton more people and attitude in my many yrs dropping by Manhattan DMV locations. Maybe I was lucky the few times I went to the Atlantic Mall location cause it was fast, easy, and dare I say Pleasant experience

I made the NY switch at the express DMV at Herald Square. Get there early and the line moves quickly. I was there 30 min before opening and on my way home about an hour later.

FAWN:

did you have an out-of-state license?

OMG that herald square DMV is a nightmare. I went there to do the whole after-marriage-change-of-name thing and it took 4 hours because they kept giving me the wrong forms and then telling me it was my fault, being surly, unhelpful, etc.

That said, I've always found the Chinatown DMV to be pretty speedy.
