dehumidifiers

Looking for a dehumidifier for our basement. We seem to be getting a lot of moisture with all this rain and we feel a dehumidifier would be great. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out consumer reports online. They are the perfect starting point for something like this. We have a dehumidifier in our basement and we empty 5 gallons of water a day from it in the summer.

Can't check the brand we have right now, but one thing I would recommend if possible--get it tied into your waste line if you don't want to be emptying it constantly. Our plumber was able to do this easily, but we had to put the dehumidifier on a stand so that it was higher than the waste pipe.

The other thing that works really well is a radon pump. Basically you wire it to a humidity sensing switch and it pumps all the air out of the basement. You run it in-line with some 6" PVC pipe vented out the basement. It circulates a lot more volume of air out of the basement than a dehumidifier will process. Obviously there has to be an air intake as well but unless this is a completely sheetrocked, tightly closed baeement that is not an issue.

Absolutely agree with Dibs. Dehumidifiers are energy hogs and also heat the space to boot. If you enough air circulation, most basements do not need dehumidification. As a cheaper alternative, if have the window for a large square fan it will work too.

if you go the dehumidifier route, get one that's rated "energy star," as they're much more efficient.
