A Tree Falls In Brooklyn
Not sure why the city cut down this tree in Greenwood Heights (31 btw 4/5). Just as some people on this block have contacted the city that they would like more trees they go ahead and knocked it down! The funny thing is they did it right after the street cleaners came. So now the street is filled with sawdust. Our tax dollars at its finest.

Since you were there to snap the photo, wouldn't it have made sense to ask the contractors? For all you know, the tree was diseased or otherwise unhealthy.

These people are "gypsy" tree cutters. This sort of thing goes on all across the country as pulp prices have risen dramatically due to the fact that more people in China are now using toilet paper.

DIBS, people in china got more toilet paper than they can use and more is coming in from the US Treasury - ie the mighty USD (not worth much but good enough to wipe CHINAMan butts)

And yet it remains essentially "fixed" to the renminbi.

Dave, if true, gives new meaning to "incentivize." In the meantime, massive numbers of Southeast Asian trees destroyed to produce disposable chopsticks: http://www.competetoconserve.com/blog/2008/08/the-disposable-chopsticks-debate/
The link below shows examples of damaged trees (i.e. damage sufficient that the City would remove), as well as containing information on reporting arborcide
(i.e. illegal, intentional and malicious destruction of trees): http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_your_park/trees_greenstreets/tree_damage_arborcide.html

My money is on long horned beetle infestation. Really? Sawdust in the street? That bothers you?

Bklyn Fire - not at all. But this literary occurred right after street cleaning. You can still see the cars double parked. it just literary nullified the cleaning.
