You could try oxalic acid.

Are you referring to the white ring on the right hand side close to the near end of the piece? If so, there are various products available at the hardware store for removing these. If they don't work, you could refinish the entire surface with Restor-A-Finish. But oxalic acid is really only suitable for lightening wood that has black stains caused by prolonged water penetration. It's also harder to work with than the OTC products for white rings and should be used with care (a. it's toxic; b. it could cause additional damage if you don't have experience with it).

my mom taught me her trick as a kid, and it works: rub a light film of mayonaise into the spot and let it soak in.
but I've also heard of using a cotton towel and light iron for a minute....supposedly it works wonders.

I usually take the path of least resistance- Have you tried paste wax applied with 0000 steel wool? It will gently abbraide the surface, while adding to it at the same time. Polish lightly with a soft cloth (clean rag or cheese cloth) until desired lustre is attained.

I think there was an article on water-stain removal in the Times recently -- different approaches for white stains and darker stains.
