Source for Plants in Bulk?

hi brownstoners - i am wondering if anyone has a good source in NYC, LI or NJ (other than HD or Lowe's) for inexpensive plants in bulk. we are looking for your standard brooklyn backyard shade plants and flowers. we're not looking for super-high quality or variety - just something we can use to pretty up our disaster area of a backyard until we have a real budget. thanks!

It's in Canarsie between Foster Avenue and Ditmas and E. 83rd to E. 87th. Entrance is at Foster and E. 86th/87th. Best plant wholesalers there are (1) Lawrence Lapide and (2) James Gale.

I was not all that impressed with either the prices or variety of the stuff at Brooklyn Terminal Mkt. They seem to have tons of stuff, but most of it is annuals and really generic. Sorry to say, for perennials I ended up at HD & Lowes. The selection was generally better at their suburban locations. Prices are very fair for the quality and size of the plants.

Well_PHed, for really EXCELLENT nurseries in New Jersey, I heartily recommend Willow Run in Cresskill (Country Road); D'Angelo Farms in Dumont (Washington Avenue) and Metropolitan Plant & Flower Exchange ( locations in Fort Lee, Paramus and West Orange). I've been to all 3 recently (Met Exchange in West Orange just yesterday) and selections are wonderful. Prices aren't necessarily the cheapest, but they aren't as high as some other nurseries right here in Brooklyn. Plus, the sales tax is lower.

Joe Bushwick, as for the Brooklyn Terminal Market -- well I can agree that I'm used to the Market looking much better than it was looking when I was there about 2 weeks ago. I asked at both Lapide and Gale when the next major influx of plant materials would be. Got shrugs at both places, but my guess is that it won't be for at least a few more weeks when the late summer/early fall shipments start coming in. HOWEVER, the OP asked about "standard, brooklyn backyard shade plants and flowers." For that kind of plant and flower material, the Terminal market is still a good bet to fit the bill deal right now and it's still better on price than most other nurseries in the borough -- including HD and Lowes.

thanks Joe and Brooklynista - both are useful suggestions. we loved what we found at gowanus nursery but are very much gardening neophytes and don't want to kill our budget and/or expensive plants. (as an aside, i don't want to ask for too much, but i would love any recommendations for perennials that like the shade and don't look too much like they're just there to take up space.)

some perennial plant recommendations from a shady brooklyn backyard:

hydrangeas
autumn sedum
zebra grass
asiatic lilies (these work best if their "faces" get some sun)

We can sometimes become real snobs about HD and Lowe's, I am not saying that this is the case with you Well, but as a beginner, they are a good bet. As long as you keep your receipt, they will take anything back for refund or exchange. I have found the HD at Gateway Mall and the Cropsey Avenue store to have the best selections. The Terminal Market is pretty good too but returning things that didn't work out will be difficult. I have also ordered from Bluestone Perennials.
