Should I reconsider my offer?

Hi all,

I am a Manhattanite looking to buy in Brooklyn and just put in an offer on a great one bedroom co-op in an awesome location for an awesome price. One thing that is giving me cause for concern, however, is that the ceiling in the kitchen unintentionally slopes upward (the floors in the kitchen also slightly slope although this is less noticeable). I've noticed this sloping effect in a few pre-war co-ops I've looked at (which makes putting in crown moldings impossible I guess!) and I'm wondering if this should be cause for concern? Does it say something about the quality of the building or is it just a part of some pre-war co-ops that we have to live with? That is my only gripe with this apartment - other than that I think it's great.

What say you wise Brooklynites?

Thank You!

Have an inspection done on the unit including the roof/basement of the building. The inspector should be able to indicate whether the sloping is cause for concern or not.

Get an inspection and have your offer contingent on the inspection. If it is the top floor the ceiling may just be following the pitch of the roof. The angle makes crown moldings slightly more difficult to install.

Walk. I'd be more concerned that prices are sloping downward. 1BR co-ops will be a dime/dozen. Don't be foolish.

Typical BHO/Team bear commentary. Don't even know the facts.

You just put in an offer and post a question after wards...what is the point...

welcome bk-curious. Although you can't tell from some of these posts the vast majority of people in our fair borough are very pleasant.

The sloping is probably nothing to worry about in an older building. The settling kinda comes with the territory. Creates a few decorating challenges, but no biggie. It is a concern if there's large recent cracks and such around the sloping. Small spiderwebby cracks just due to plaster's seasonal shifting ;-)

Best of luck in your new digs!

Get it inspected and listen to what the engineer tells you.

Ask the seller. Probably it's been like that forever. that was the situation with our place.
