setback on central a/c condenser

are there regulations on how close to the property line one can place the condenser unit for a central a/c?

I say 8'-0". But if building is 16'-0" wide or less then what?

There's a guy in Bay Ridge who has his on the sidewalk in front of the house. Great for my dog to relieve himself.

Ours is about 15ft from the back of the building and literally 2' from our neighbor's property line. I beleive this is legal since it was condo conversion that was extensively inspected by DOB and others prior to CO issuance.

I was recently given a hard time about this by a building inspector closing out one of my jobs. He said the condenser could not be within the rear yard.

A condenser can be placed up to the property line, in theory. This issue is not limited by distance setbacks. The placement has to do with noise dissipation, as the equipment cannot generate noise of a specific amount of decibels at the neighboring property. I don't know the decibel levels offhand, but that is the limiting factor.

DEP website has the A/C info. 45 decibels (above the ambient noise level) measured from a neighbor's window 3' away. Have seen them right on the property line so agree setback may be irrelevant.
