Incinerator chute
Anyone have an original incinerator chute in their brownstone? Would love to have it removed. Any idea how much something like that might run? It actually takes up a good deal of space in each of the 4floors, about 3ft x5ft. Obviously valuable sq footage. Any info would be much appreciated!

Much more likely to be a dumb waiter.

Sounds kinda cool. Does this date from the 1840s or 50s or is it later?

Can you put a skylight on the roof and use it as a lightwell?

I don't recall exactly when the house was built. I have that info...somewhere???
Unfortunately it is far from cool. It is a large obtrusive chute that is walled in with only the door for depositing your garbage into it exposed. It runs through the entire bulding from roof to basement. In the current configuration of the building it is located in the corner of the kithens sudstantially reducing the size of those rooms. We are planning to combine two floors for a duplex and need that space to install a staircase. I fear the cost & complexity of removing may not allow us to do it. Not even sure which trade would be ideal for such a job???
