I Want to Help, But Need Help!

Hi all. I am new to the Brooklyn Heights neighnorhood, though a native Brooklynite.

I help families plan & reach financial goals by feeeing up money by refinancing mortgages, saving for goals like college, buying a home, retirement, etc. and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what's the best way to reach out to the community to let folks know I exist and can help them reach their goals, as I don't charge a fee for my time/service?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Most people in BH have already reached their goals.

Sorry for the typos in my post! I usually proofread before posting, but accidentally posted first!

Is this a cult?

How did you reach out to people in your old neighborhood?

If you don't charge a fee is this true volunteer work or do you expect some compensation in the end for your advice and counsel?

If he doesn't charge a fee, he get's paid a commission from the providers of the services he recommends. Either way no one works for free.

You could take out an ad on Brownstoner.

DIBS, that was priceless. ALtho not true when I lived there :-)

In response to some of your comments & questions:

1. Wow, I'm impressed that most people reached their goals in BH. Does anyone know of any networking groups where professionals get together and meet? I see that some of you are attorneys, teachers, etc.- I have clients whom I have referred business and other useful services to and I'd love to meet & network with you to see how we may be able to refer business or other value to each other. If anyone would like to meet up some time, please email me at esegal(at)primerica.com.

2. Yes this is a cult. Instead of charging a fee, I require clients to drink the kool-aid. :-)

3. I have a lot of friends in my old neighborhood who referred me to their friends, whereas I don't have any friends (yet) in BH. I don't charge a fee for my time, rather the companies I work with compensate me based on the work I do. For example, if I rollover a 401k into an IRA or set up a tax-deferred college savings account, I am paid an annual percentage of the value of the account by the company, which means that as you make more money, I make more money, so I have an incentive to ensure I am working in your best interests.

4. Rob, if you email me, either I can meet with you or I can refer someone in Park Slope to you.

5. Denton, thanks for the tip about an ad on brownstoner, but just wondering- does anyone actually look at and patronize these businesses?

6. Eman- you have unmasked me, now I'll have to come and snack on your blood.

Interesting that if you type primerica into a google search window one of the frequently searched suggestions is "primerica scam". SaveNowForCollege admitted it is a cult. Apparently multilevel marketing. Maybe rob can work on building the pyramid in park slope.

Yes, Google, the gateway to the unregulated internet does offer some very interesting search suggestions for many searches. Amazingly enough, the Better Business Bureau, which actually does research companies, rates Primerica as A+:

Primerica isn't a pyramid scheme. I'm not a fan of the company and wouldn't recommend their products or advice. I've been cold called twice by their reps and in both cases I knew more about what they were selling than the reps did, so they are certainly unimpressive, which is probably due to their creative (read: sketchy) recruitment strategy. But they are a legitimate, regulated organization, for whatever that's worth.

OP, you might want to keep that Atlanta BBB review to yourself. It's not likely to impress anyone here. BBB does not rate or accredit Primerica in NY.
