Flies in the house

The past couple of days there have been well over 30 flies in our apartment. We are not sure where the source can be. The apt is clean, the windows have been closed. Any idea of where these flies may be coming from?

Comments

I've encountered this twice, once someone passed in an adjacent apartment, and I kept getting huge flies in my apt even though all windows were closed. Once police cleared the body the flies stopped. Basically some creature may have died on your premises somewhere.

The second time, was a month ago, I had work done installing an AC unit, and a worker left a panel open in my basement. Somehow, flies were originating in there and then getting into the house. I diused the are with bleach and closed the panel and no flies since.

Is there a place you see them coming from? Or more frequently?

In our former apartment building we had trouble with flies and a science teacher in the building claimed the flies were due to a mouse problem at the building. She said they were attracted to the dead mice. The mouse problem lasted many many months and involved many mice, but when it was resolved, the flies disappeared.

Could be coming out of your sink drain as well

The wet weather is making these bastards multiply like, well, flies.

myplace is probably right. I had a dead mouse that I couldn't get at in a basement. I could smell it. i knew that in about a week the place would be full of flies and there's be no more dead mouse smell. The maggots ate the mouse and turned into flies. The basement was full of them.

Do they have those electric fly swatters here? They are made in China. They look like tennis racquets, except the strings are made of wire and electrified. You wave it around at the flies and when they hit the paddle, they zap, electrocuted. It's rather satisfying.

I got a text message this morning at 4:45 am from my tenant (she didn't want to wake me up, but she did) leaving for the airport. She said there was some wierd bug action in the hallway. I went up there and it was a swarming of flying ants. They were outside my door outside too. After ending their little party, I did a little research and as one poster said, they come with heavy rains. Made sense to me.

We had the EXACT same problem for a while ... and then it just stopped. Every day we would kill a huge horsefly and then three more would suddenly appear. We definitely didn't have mice (or dead bodies for that matter). I do, however, think they were coming from our kitchen sink.

Fly zapping tennis racquet sold at Gracious Home and works very well!

Flying ants? Isn't that a termite swarm?

We had a huge fly problem once. They were coming into the apartment through a crack in the plumbing in the bathroom. I assume it had something to do with the standing water and bird poop in the air shaft at the basement level. We taped up the hole and they went away.
