Attach moulding to plaster wall?
Hello all... I searched the posts but couldn't find an answer. Maybe it is too basic a question! lol I am trying to figure out how to attach new wood moulding baseboards to my plaster coated walls (pre-war apt building) and my original fantasy of nailing it was cut short by the reality that behind the plaster is block (not wooden studs). Is there any more modern way to affix the moulding than those crazy long spikes that are nearly impossible to get in the wall?

By block,do you mean cement, or cinder block? If so, you could drill holes with a masonry bit and insert lead anchors to hold screws going through the molding. You might also be able to attach the molding with a glue like Liquid Nails.

use construction adhesive, toenail it with finish nails as far as you can, realizing that it will not meet the wall perfectly everywhere, remove the nails gently the next day, caulk

My carpenter used dots of paneling glue. It would be difficult to remove without breaking it. He did it about 10 years ago and I've never had to remove the molding so it hasn't been an issue.

what eman1234 said. You should have about a 1/2 inch of material to nail into before you hit the masonry. Compressor with brad nailer works great in this case because you can leave the nails in and you won't have trouble with the boards moving while hammering. Remember to dry fit the pieces first before you apply the glue
