8th St between 4th and 5th aves

I am interested in purchasing a condo on 8th St between 4th and 5th avenues and am looking for feedback on that area. Thank you!

Not the nicest block in the slope. You are stuck behind the commercial buildings running up and down 9th street. Chase, Post Office, maybe others have driveways on that street. Think there's a motorcycle paint shop back there or so - kind of an industrial feeling to it. It's very near the train, the market, and the post office, if that matters to you. I've never gotten much of a "neighborhood" vibe from that street. I know the block above, btw 5/6 has a block party, so there's some like around there.

this block doesn't have a great feel to it. i don't live in the area but i'm frequently on this block because i take a class on 8th st and 2nd ave. there seems to be quite a disconnect on 8th street once you walk west of 5th ave vs. just a block east. it feels too absorbed in the commercial/shopping feel of the major 9th st/5th ave and 9th st/4th ave intersections nearby.

this is just my personal feeling though. it's a very safe area and close to everything, but i would not like to live on that block.

I'll be the dissenter. Once you're west (downhill) of the post office truck entrance, I think that block is kinda' sweet looking. I don't know how noisy the mail trucks would be, though. The church and school on 4th Avenue are nice buildings. Is your condo in the building with the cobblestone courtard?

Hello. Thanks to all. I am looking at 243 8th Street. I don't believe there is a courtyard there. The building is very nice but the block isn't impressive. However I'd have the train and Y around the corner and 5th is just 1/2 block away. After nearly one year of looking, I feel like this may be the one but I wanted to put it out there to hear what others have to say. I don't live in Bklyn so I needed to check.

When I was house hunting (summer/fall 2008), that stretch of 8th had a lot of places that had recently been renovated, and the people who lived there seemed really excited to have them. Even places I didn't like, I felt like someone else was going to feel very thrilled to live there.

There is one fantastic place on this block with a very cool modern renovation. You wouldn't know it from the front except that it's in a string of little row-houses and it's got a gray hardly-noticeable additional floor on top. If you ever get a chance, the inside is really really cool.

I can't comment on the other concerns. If you're worried about noise, visit the neighborhood very early and see if you can hear trucks rumbling by.

I've lived near there for the past five years, and I love the area. Close to the subway, shopping and restaurants, it's an interesting mix of the old and new neighborhood.

I walk by here on the way to the subway regularly and agree with the comment that it is an interesting mix - not prime park slope brownstone but an combo of old and new, residential and other. And it is super convenient.

I have property near that area and the area has seen an increadible change in the last 10 years. As mentioned previously, its not prime park slope. However, you are walking distance to everything park slope has to offer and im sure the area will just get better and better.

I have lived on this block for many years. One of the pioneers. I raised 2 sons here and have witnessed the changes. It is a super place to live if you like having convenient subways, shopping, movies and gyms. There are folks who have lived here raised or are starting to raise families. Love the area. Post Office has never been a real problem. Not real attractive but noise from them is minimal compared to some areas near restaurants in what others think of as "prime slope." When I first moved to the block - others said - how can you live below 7th Avenue. Now they say - How did you find this? Do you know of anything for sale?
