worrisome noise from water meter

This afternoon our water meter started making a kind of high-pitched whirring noise. It hasn't stopped. The meter numbers aren't turning, at least not noticeably fast or anything. I've never heard this before. Should we call DEP tomorrow? Or a plumber? Or what?

Hi.I am a lic. plumber. You do not want to call DEP, you will get a violation. We could come and take a look at your meter and have it sent out for a repair or it may need to be rplaced.E.MULE AND SON PLUMBING AND HEATING CELL 1516 250-2234 OFFICE 1718 326-4646

Make sure all the faucets or anything that uses water are off. The water meter shoud not move period. If it is, there is a leak or you didn't shut everything off.

Are you sure it's not your electric meter?

So DEP is not responsible for their own meter as Keyspan would be if the gas meter needs repair?

See "Who is responsible for the water meter?" at this link: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/water_and_sewer_bills/wsbillfaq.shtml

Vinca -
Thanks for the link - it sounds like we should call DEP and they are responsible for any repair (our meter is sheltered and no new construction or anything). By the way, I noticed the same sound from a fire hydrant up the street - could there be a problem with the pipes or something? It sounds kind of like rushing water, but nothing in my house is on - the meter is toward the front of the house, under a crawlspace accessed from inside.

WTbound: On the occasions that I find myself with plumbing issues that are outside my skillset, I tend to next call my plumber for input, advice, and a visit if necessary. That's what I'd recommend to you: call your plumber, see whether it's a situation he can handle, and/or follow his advice on how to handle.
