Perennials

I am working on landscaping my back yard and I am looking for a good source for shade tolerant perennials. I've been to HD & Lowes and would rather not pay the prices charged at the places in Red Hook.
Any good garden centers in BK or Queens?

Try the Brooklyn Terminal Market in Canarsie.

Shannons, Fort Hamilton Parkway.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden's annual plant sale is Tuesday (member's), Wednesday and Thursday. The entire cherry esplanade is perennials. Annuals and herbs are under the tent. Staff there will be able to help anwer any and all questions, and it's all for a great cause.

If you do not find local sources for the plants you want, you'll find a wide selection of plants, including shade plants, at: http://www.hicksnurseries.com/

I like a bargain, but must say that the plants I bought at a premium at Chelsea garden center in Red Hook are doing so well that I feel like it's worth it.

The *best* place I have found is called Graceful Gardens. Look at their website. They have a flat rate for 32 perenials and annuals. It comes to about 2 bucks a plant. They ship them to you, very beautiful, well along specimens. They specialize in cottage gardens, especially Delphiniums. Last years plants came back beautifully, I ordered more this year.

Maybe you don't want to pay the prices at the Red Hook places, but is the hassle you'll have to go to to get other sources worth it? My favorite down there (by far) is Gowanus Nursery. They have a huge selection of shade perennials, and not the same stuff you see everywhere, which is nice. Best, they know brooklyn and what grows here.

Sometimes if I'm looking for "filler" annuals for the stoop or whatever I'll go to that place on Fort Hamilton (Shannon's) or some of the other cheaper garden places, and I always get so bored with the offerings. The annuals for the most part are the ho-hum flat after flat of impatiens, and the perennials are same old, same old, same old. How many hostas does Brooklyn need?

there's a place called Garden World in Queens. they have lots of stuff there and prices seem fine.

Terminal Market has more interesting inventory than usual this year.

BK Terminal market is great but if you want to order online there are some great deals at www.whiteflowerfarm.com

The Old Ironsides Astilbe collection is a real deal (12 plants for $60). These things grow fast and can be cut up into additional plants every year. One of the best shade perennials with color.

Keil Brothers in Queens--almost in Nassau County, and Hicks. I like Gowanus as well, but their inventory depletes quickly. For mail order, try Bluestone Perennials--small plants, but healthy and very reasonably priced.

The BBG is a great cause and offers good quality plants but ain't no deal, cost-wise. I also heart Gowanus Nursery. Dragonetti on Ralph Ave is pretty good and a little less expensive than some of the others.

After working on our backyard that faces north we have worked with the trials and tribulations of shade for a long time. The best local place I have found in Brooklyn is in Brooklyn Terminal Market. L J Lapide, 718-763-3665. I have been going there for four years now. They are knowledgeable. the prices are great, the products are excellent and they have a vast selection. The people are also very nice. There are a couple of nurseries there but they are the best.

They can guide you as far as what will do well in shade and what will not. They have perrenials and annuals, bulbs and seed, etc.

Good luck with the shade.

Been going to Brooklyn Terminal Market for over 20 years and yes, it's definitely worth it.

My best finds were at Martin Villette - a huge fancy pants garden center in LI off the LIE. They have great sales in October on perennials, knowlegeable pleasant staff, pretty place and it's a nice way to spend a half day. Same thing in the spring but without the sales.
