park slope parking question

My sister's coming Memorial Day weekend to play tourist and to help me move out of NYC, therefore she is bringing her station wagon. How hard will it be for her to find on street parking Friday night around 11:30 PM? I'm at 4th Ave at Garfield Place. Is she better off trying to park up at the garage near the Atlantic Terminal?

Comments

It probably won't be a problem - the area empties out over holiday weekends.

Drive around the block a couple of times. If there's nothing do the garage. Shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks. I've actually never been in the city for a holiday weekend...so I have no idea what the parking would be like. And since I don't have a car here, I don't tend to pay attention to parking trends...

Exactly
Park Slope is a ghost town most weekends during the summer and even emptier on a holiday weekend
she will be fine

I used to live around there. Plenty of parking around 3rd avenue and president/Carrol street-especially weekends.

Just remind yours sister not to leave anything visible in the car, epecially if you park on the semi-resdiential streets near the canal. I think it's perfectly safe, but IMO, the more deserted a street is, the more chance that someone might do something annoying like that. Nothing stinks more than having to find a body shop to replace a smashed window and spend time digging out any glass when you are trying to move apartments.

My car is parked one block from there right now. Will be easy to find a place.

Also agree with the advice on tucking valuables out of site. I had my window smashed about 6 months ago at 4th + Carroll. Police officer said it was likely because I had a GPS mount on my windshield. GPS itself was at home. What a waste.

Although I agree she should be able to find a spot - I also agree that her station wagon will be vulnerable and if it's broken into - what a way to ruin your move. I have, in a pinch, parked overnight at the garage on Union Street between 6th and 7th Avenues (same side of street as the Fire House). I think it would be worth it to pull in there, then you can leave anything in the car and know it will still be there in the morning.

Apt time to bring up a new movement starting in the neighborhood -- it's called "Parking Around Me" and it allows people share info about open parking spaces via text message or Twitter.

As a PS resident, i got involved b/c i've felt the pain of parking and really hope this can help bring some order to the chaos.

Seems to be getting some attention: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local-beat/Park-Slope-Service-Uses-Twitter-Text-Messages-to-Share-Available-Street-Parking-Intel-70340582.html

Interested to hear what people think...
