Newbie

Hi,
I'm brand new to Brownstoner.

A co-worker advised that this site was a great resource for tips about most things in Brooklyn.

I've been in Brooklyn about 2 years, but in the last week I've acquired a cat, a car, and moved into a new apartment in a neighborhood I'm very unfamiliar with. I've been petless and carless for the last couple years.

I'm in the Kensington neighborhood now. So far, I love it. Can anyone recommend a tried and true great veterinarian? The same for a auto mechanic? I am willing to travel out of the neighborhood and I am more concerned about professionalism and high standards of service and integrity than I am rates.

I also need to purchase window coverings for two of my windows, and finding a good barber isn't a bad idea either. Since neither health or large expense is involved in finding a good barber, that is less risky to discover on a trial and error basis. Hair usually grows back (so far so good anyway).

I'd appreciate good advice.

Thanks,

Gus

there's also a Yahoo group -- KWTneighbors -- which is just the thing for questions like this.

For auto repairs, try Luis at the Shell station on Beverley and CIA.

See the open thread for a vet recommendation in the Slope -- convenient by car and near the F.

Animal Kind at 7th Av. & 11th St. - excellent vet. I have 4 nearer to me but go there.

I don't know anything about vets, but welcome!

Hola, fellow Kensgingtonian here.

Can't recommend any vets as I don't have a pet.

For mechanics I go to Unitek 718-372-0202 on Neptune and West 15th. Great guys and reliable and don't rip people off. They used to be in Kensington right on Coney Island for many years but moved to Neptune Avenue about 3 years ago because they were priced out of their place and I followed them there.

For Barber, I go to Yakov on Coney Island, Between Foster and Avenue H (Closer to Foster Avenue). He has also been there for over 15 years and a great guy. Haircut is $12. If you're driving towards Avenue H from the manhattan side, He is on the right side like 5 or 6th storefront from Foster Avenue (Not sure of the exact address).

I would also suggest Animal Kind on 11th Street and 7th Avenue ... wonderful vets there.

My husband and son have gone to the barber on PPW for years, close by Connecticut Muffin and Bartel Pritchard Square... decent haircut and reasonable prices.

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the neighborhood. I take my cats to Pet Haven, which is at the intersection of McDonald, Caton and Fort Hamilton. Dr. Jill Caruso is great.

My friends also take their car to the Shell on Beverly and Coney Island Ave. While you're over there, you can get some good Bangladeshi food at Madina, right across the street (a hole in the wall, but delicious food) and you can go just a couple blocks down Coney Island Ave to NYC ICY for dessert.

People swear by Yolanda, who is a haircutter on E. 4th near Caton.
