Mower suggestion
I have a grassy backyard with approximate dimensions of 40 x 20 or 800 square feet. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, inexpensive mower for such a yard? Thanks!

get one of the new ones that run on a battery. I had a cheap push mower - my backyard is way smaller than yours - and it died after a few years. Have an electric now that's great but its corded. They hold their value very well, actually, but they do cost something...

Having mowed a large lawn for years using an electric mower, I agree that anything without a cord is WAY better. Electric mowers suck; the cords are a huge nuisance to deal with. Happy mowing, wasder.

I've been mowing lawns since I was about 9! For a small patch like this I wouldn't hesitate to get an electric. Also, they're quiter for the City, can be gotten smaller than gas ones and therefore are more easiy stored...they're also lighter and can be hung up. I never thought the old style push mowers really did that great of a job in making a lawn look nice. I suspect the ones made nowadays are made in China and are quite a bit different from those I knew from the 50s!!

As much as I hate electric mowers, DIBS is spot on regarding the noise associated with gas mowers. My old neighbours used to use one and it sounded like a Boeing 747 was taking off next to my house every Saturday morning.

I purchased a Scott push mower last year and I was thinking of getting an electric one because I don't like the results of the push mower. I have about 300 sq ft. I also need an edger.

For a small brownstone back yard any power mower, even electric, is far more trouble than it's worth. I suggest the smallest size manual push reel mower. If you don't want one made in China, try Craig's List, or stoop sales for an old US-made model. I have a mower that I bought used at the Salvation Army warehouse (Quincy & Downing) 38 years ago (for my first So. Slope garden apartment). If you must have a new mower, this one at Vermont Country Store looks pretty good:
It takes me about 20 minutes to mow my yard and more than half of that time involves moving the lawn furniture.

I seond the recommendation for a push mower. We have a Sunlawn that we use on about the same size yard you have. It works well.

BTW, the Vermont Country Store mower I linked to at 9:42 is made in the US. It's also rather pricey, like everything else at VCS, but should be excellent quality.
