increase in apartment break-ins?

Just wondering if anyone has read about an increase in burglaries. I own a brownstone in north Park Slope, and for at least 20 years there weren't any burglaries. Suddenly in three weeks there were two.
I don't know how the burglar gained entrance to the building but I'm making a couple of changes to increase security at the entrance. But it won't help if the key got into the wrong hands.

I had a break in at my brownstone in center park slope last year. 2 different incidents. They gain access from the roof. Another attempt was made a few months ago but the burgler failed to gain access to the apts because the windows were closed. A tenant called to say he saw someone on the fire escape and the hatch to the roof was open. I am trying to get the 5th ave BID to invest in extra security. They seemed concerned with the garbage at this point.

My friend's building was broken into in May 2009 in South Slope/Park Slope. They used the fire escape to get to the roof, and then they broke through the roof into an apt. The roof had an old skylight that was glass on the roof but covered in the apt by a sheet rock ceiling. The tenant did not know there was a skylight. They busted through the skylight and then the ceiling and they were in the apt. They escaped through a window and down the fire escape in back.

I think the neighborhood residents should look for this roof and fire escape vulnerability and fix it.

This is a bit frightening to me. How small do you think a skylight would have to be to make it impossible for a burglar to fit through?
