Why not simply buy a replacement fixture with a defuser at Lowes or Home Depot for $35 or less?

yaakovdoe: you mean replace the whole fixture?

If you're handy, or willing to hire an electrician, you can replace the entire fixture, doesn't have to be fluorescent. You'll definitely find surface mount fluorescent lighting fixtures at HD. They're usually in a secondary "industrial" aisle, near the double aisle featuring their lighting products. There are a large number of online suppliers, for example: http://www.brodwax.com/
