Fan Safety?

So, this might be a stupid question, but I was wondering if it's normal for a ceiling fan to wobble back and forth a bit while spinning (and also seems a bit 'loose' when I pull the starter). It came installed in the apartment I bought, so I'm hoping I don't have to get it checked out / replaced. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Try cleaning the accumulated grim and cat hair off of the blades. That's the simplest solution to the unbalance.

Oh, the looseness. The brackets that hold the thing are more like a open hook instead of a rigid threaded mount. That explains the looseness.

Sometimes the wobbling is because the blades are not balanced--never were, never will be, due to cheap manufacturing or careless assembly. Sometimes can be cured by adding a washer or two to the screws holding the fan blades. Depending on extent and source of wobble, I might not consider it safe (opportunity for electrical short).

Have it checked out if you are not qualified to do it yourself. It was likely installed using a telescopic light fixture bracket that is not rated for the weight of a fan. They sell brackets that are rated for use with a fan. Better yet, for a truly rock solid installation, it should be fixed directly to wooden supports connected to the ceiling joists. I have a friend who had one fall on her head while it was spinning due to a poor installation. It's not something that you want to play around with.

There are balancing kits with instructions and self adhesive weights. It ain't rocket science.
