electronic door release system
I'm tired of running downstairs to let in visiting friends. Any recommendations for someone who can add a door release feature to my intercom?

I presume that you are looking for an electric strike and already have an intercom system. It should be a no-brainier for any locksmith- problem is that most (all)locksmiths will butcher your door in the process.
The best way to pass the current through the jamb is with an electrified hinge.

Southslope is exactly right on all counts. Be sure to ask for their top guy if you have a nice door you'd like to keep that way, and stay away from magnetic locks. They look awful and there are alot of life safety codes you can easily run afoul of.
