Dark dining room, help
I have a dark north-facing dining room. Wood shutters (stained brown), and white woodwork. It's currently painted brick-red and I'm feeling that it's too dungeony. Any suggestions?

A soft cream or butter yellow would look beautiful, warm up the room and work with the wood as well. A soft green, with a little yellow it would be beautiful and a third color choice would be a soft robin's egg blue.

Paint color can dramatically change the quality of light in a room. I'd also check to make sure your ceilings are painted in the purest white. Sometimes they get dingy and it knocks down reflectivity significantly. Strategically placed mirrors to reflect window light can help.
What's outside the window?

I have to second Bxgrl. And personally, I find white woodwork can sometimes be a little harsh - prefer off white, but that's just me and it depends on the room and the other colors.

Nothing's outside the window. Just a view of the street.

Do you have picture rail molding? If so, I'd suggest (as others have) decorator's or ultra white for the ceiling, then below the rail, try a warm cream like B. moore Ivory Tusk or Linen white. For woodwork, consider a greige like BM Stonington, then use art or bright curtains. Also, eggshell finish will give you some reflected light. (or, greige walls, with linen white woodwork is a classic combo.
You could also do a pale blue or yellow, but I've always found that pale yellow is really hard to choose...always looks green to me.
