595 Halsey Street: Any thoughts
the seller is offering this place which has been renovated for $499,999. Seems like a good deal. Any thoughts about the price and location?

Looks like the house next door is vacant and boarded up. Be sure to visit this block after dark, to make sure that you're comfortable here and that the house next door isn't a haven for late-night activity.

I looked at it, it is a pit. Seriously. Look at the walls more closely. See how they bulge? That carpeted second floor? And the weird wavy feeling under it?
The hallway on the parlor level has beadboard over godknowswhat and you can kind of see what in places where the beadboard is pulling away.
There's *a lot* going on behind the scenes in that place. The renovation looks okay at a glance but it is sketchy as hell if you scratch the surface.
The block is great, though.

why on the great block people put bars on the windows of the first floor and on the front doors.

Serpentor, did you see it in person?

I also took a look at it and I am considering it. I want to see what the inspection turns up. It seems like a good block..and the price is right. I will take another closer look at it.

I also took a look at it and I am considering it, but I don't want to make a huge mistake. I want to see what the inspection turns up. It seems like a good block..and the price is right. I will take another closer look at it. Lots more pictures here:

Mopar,
I saw a place that I thought was 595 Halsey but the top floor was mos def wall to wall carpet. Definitely the same block, I guess a different place.

Okay, Mopar is right: the mess was down the block. I also walked through 595, but nothing grabbed me about it. The price is definitely not bad and it is a nice walk to the A at Utica. If the bones stand up to inspection and you can afford it, go for it.
And, the day I walked through 595 Halsey, there was major demolition going on next door (boarded windows)--Trulia says it sold for nearly 600K in 2006 (top o'the market there!) and so unless the new owners are plumb outta cash, I'd figure it will be cleaned up (or sold) in short order.

636 Halsey which is right across the street is in contract for $400,000. Maybe you saw that one?

OK then, if you like it and the inspection doesn't turn up anything, offer 10 percent less, it's a good deal.

Bars may have been put on years ago. Prime Slope blocks have lots of them on the parlor floor - mainly installed 15 years ago or so.

my hunch is that bars are meant to prevent people from breaking into your house? I wonder how effective they are?

it looks like a good deal. i say go for it!

Every rowhouse in Brooklyn from the Heights to Bed Stuy has bars on the windows. This is the norm in the big city.

Does anyone have an idea of what a small 3-bedroom would rent for in this area?

I backed out of this deal and ran like hell. Whoever said there was a lot going on beneath the surface was right!
