It's hard to tell from this view, but I believe it is a mountain laurel?

Looks like a type of Mountain Laurel.

It does look like a mountain laurel, but the flowers are totally different than any laurel I've seen before.

I think the flowers look that way because it is shot from above. The mountain laurel is a lovely bush -- nice light colored leaves, and has a nice shape as it grows.

Unfortunately, mine is not looking so nice...I think it needs some real pruning help (any advice would be appreciated.)But, the flowers look like (this sounds weird) dripping bells rather than the sunburst formations I've seen before.

YES!! That's it. Thanks so much!

new2- Don't prune it until after it flowers die! After that you can clip off the dead branches and shape it how you'd like. Try not to clip below "new growth".

Sorry, should have explained that better. If you have a main branch, and there are 4 smaller branches shooting off of it make sure that you leave at least one or two of those off shooting branches (particularly new growth ones). If you clip below those you'll get a plant that ends up growing in "leggy" instead of in a shrublike shape.

Make sense?

yes, indeed! Although I think I'm a little late to the game, as it's already leggy. Can I cut it way down in the fall and kind of start over, or will that kill it. (I'm new to this stuff, can't you tell?)

really appreciate it!

I dunno, I never clear cut anything. This might help though...
