Stain Glass Restoration & info?

Stain Glass Restoration & info?

With MM's lovely article today I thought it was a good day to ask this... We just bought a brownstone that has been neglected/abandoned for countless years but has wonderful details intact including stained glass throughout. While clearing out the crawlspace this week we found the original very big stairwell window(!). I can't tell you how excited we are, but as with the other glass in the building it will need some tender loving restoration. We can't get close enough yet to see details but I've attached the best picture I could get. We would also love to identify the artisan(s) of the glasswork throughout the house if possible. I have a number of pictures of the other pieces (a full double hung bathroom window, front parlor lintels, stairway base piece, dining room bays, skylight window, builtin doors etc.). If anyone has experience and would be willing to give us advice or info we'd be very grateful.
Thank you!

wow, that sounds like really good stuff. Just be prepared for some pretty expensive quotes.

Contact Alberts on Saint Marks Ave, they do wonderful work

PHfamily, how did Alberts' quotes compare to other prices wise? I asked him for a quote for 2 window panes (16 x 34) and got quoted ~700 each pane. Don't know if that's good, back prices but certainly more expensive I was hoping.

Wow, cool. So this is the skylight that goes above the staircase? Very cool find.

We paid about $700 to repair/re-lead a large pane.....he seemed competitively priced and did a great job. Our price included the removal and reinstallation of the large pane as well. it was worth the money, everyone comments on how great it looks. Good luck!

PHfamily, thanks. I don't doubt Alberts' ability - heard others' very positive comments about his work here. my $700 per pane was just repairs - removal and reinstallation is extra

There's a place on 5th avenue between 1st and 2nd that specializes in stained glass, but I can't remember the name.

m4l- Did they also give you a price on the repair/reinstallation? You may save quite a bit by using Albert's. I think he was the guy I was trying to remember for you awhile back.

OP- Gorgeous piece of stained glass, btw!

This is an excellent stain glass restorer.

Unfortunately you are so far away, but we use someone locally for minor repairs. We sell most of our transom sized stained glass for under $400.00, so paying $700.00 to repair it seems awfully high. We just got 8 new pieces in today (2 need repair) and will be bringing some of them down to Brooklyn Flea on May 16th. Photos should be on our website in a few days. Iknow, no choice but to repair - landmarked bldg and stain glass window faces street

We also used Albert, they're not cheap, but their depth of experience was way more than other options.

$700 a pane seems like a fair price to me. Alberts does good work, and is experienced.

That's insane that you found that! How awesome! I would echo the place on 5th and Albert's.... Let us know how it goes!

Treehugger, I'm sorry, I haven't been keeping up. I fourth Albert's dispite the expense. It will be worth it.

Unfortunately, I can't help you on the maker of the glass. If you go to the DOB, and your blueprints are in your file, MAYBE there will be a clue there, although not likely. If your building's architect is well known, or left records, there might be info at the Bklyn Historical Society. If the artisan was local, there may be some info there. Aside from that, it's really hard to tell. As gorgeous as these windows are, they were probably ordered wholesale from a catalogue for all of the developers' houses that he was doing at the time, and the details are lost to history.
