Sidewalk street tree gate???
Hi I just received my street tree this morning and I am so happy but I would like to put a gate around it high enough so that people will not let their dogs in and just enough for me to get debris. does anyone know of a steel company that can do a job like this??
Thanks
Sarah from Bed-Stuy

If you want to go cheaper route Home Depot has a few choices of metal fences you can put around these beddings.

I ordered some online...they are a lot nicer than the ones you get online. I'll have to try and remeber where they came from.
I've seen the really nice heavy black ones along Stuyvesant and would love to get one installed.

I have found that a few mothballs inbetween the planting in the tree pit helps discourage dogs and cats.
The metal gate will only do so much.
If you do put a gate in, make sure that you either lower it alongside the curb, or place it several inches in from the curb, to allow car doors to open and drivers/passengers to get out without damaging their car or your new fence!!

The city did put them in but not everywhere.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Greenbridge program conducts classes on a variety of subjects, including street trees. Due to rain, one was rescheduled for tonight, though there may no longer be openings. Advance registration is required. For a Greenbridge phone number and more info, see: http://www.bbg.org/edu/adult/community.html
Basic Tree Planting
Clifford Rose and Robin Simmen
Trees clean our air, shelter birds, provide shade, and improve property values. In this workshop, learn how to plant a tree and join the MillionTreesNYC movement to make our city a greener, healthier place to live. Meet at Green-Wood Cemetery for a hands-on demonstration by a certified arborist of the correct way to plant a container tree. Where to buy trees and how to care for them after planting will also be discussed.
Rain date: Thursday, April 2 | 5–7 p.m.
No charge, but registration is required
Street Tree Bed Gardening
Susan Fields
Street trees do much to improve our environment, but they often receive little care. In this class, learn the benefits of street trees, how to improve the health of a street tree by caring for its bed, get tips on tree-bed gardening, and more in-depth information on street-tree care. Bring your street-tree care questions and find out more about the city's efforts to increase and protect the urban forest canopy.
Tuesday, April 7 | 6–8 p.m.
No charge, but registration is required.

I'm going to have to see if I kept the invoice. I can't remember the place offhand. They had different styles and came in 2' or 3' sections. They're OK but I wish they were heavier.

Now if we can get another 500 trees in Bed-Stuy. Mysideofstuy you are my kind of neighbor. I tried to get people on my block to plant more trees and they look at me like I have egg on my face. How long did it take you to get the tree?

Amzl Hill.....
I would say about two years...alot of it was the run around I I found out that I have a gas line pipe in front of my house so I couldn't get a tree and I got knocked off the list. So then my neighbor who was the only one without the direct gas line in front of his house agreed to allow me to request a tree to be placed in front of his house. Now this I had to get a signed letter agreement and fax to the City Forester of North Brooklyn I will give you his name and phone number(email me @ sarahdjarnie@mac.com) and he helped me alot also Beryl Nyack head of the Bed Stuy community board.

Our block associating just got a grant to have all the tree pits enlarged and to get matching pretty fences around them.
