sash lifts

sash lifts

Replaced old brownstone windows with new Kolbe ones, but they didn't come with handles. I'm used to a bar that runs across the entire window, but I'm guessing it's because I'm not used to old windows :)

The installer recommended ones that look the like the attached picture. Are there any other historical options for opening windows? Especially since we will want to open our windows from both the top and the bottom, and having handles on both the top and bottom feels like it would look a little silly.

Thanks!

I have those & put 2 on the bottom window (each side along the bottom) & one on the top (in the center along the top sash.) I use a pole to pull down the upper window or to close it. There are other, more modern looking fixtures but I found them awkward to grip.

We have a 4" one on the bottom of each window. We bought them at Rejuvenation and it looks fine, make opening the window easy.

From your post, it sounds like you might prefer a flush mount sash lift.
House of Antique Hardware has a pretty good selection and variety: http://houseofantiquehardware.com/s.nl/sc.12/category.72/.f

Vinca, those pulls look great - definitely closer to what I was envisioning.

Arkady - thanks for the heads up on possible awkwardness - I guess I should try them out somewhere.
