OT

Is that what happens on Park Slope Parent??

Comments

okay WHO was the bad seed? what happened?

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 29, 2009 11:40 AM

Well, it's not like today's OT had any redeeming qualities. Except for you, dibs :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 11:40 AM

I think Mr. B is referring to 998 and his word for gays. Did someone write to Mr. B and point it out?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 11:43 AM

it must have been the whole dating matchmaker thing.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 29, 2009 11:44 AM

oh that makes sense snappy. jeez. so a non poster jumps into the OT and posts crap and then the whole tread gets deleted? oh dave you probably didnt help posting that gilette song hahahah

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 29, 2009 11:46 AM

I'm sure he reads all the threads. It got pretty bad today. But 998 was really out there.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 11:46 AM

No, rob it was the vitriol that 998 sparked, I suuspect specifically the use of the "f" word and the responses it illicited where I was guilty as well.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 11:46 AM

And, for that I apologize but a simple warning and we would have ignored him from thereon.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 11:48 AM

"Well, it's not like today's OT had any redeeming qualities. Except for you, dibs :-)"

Thanks a lot bxgrl. :-)

The worst part is it was meant to be jessibaby's day!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 11:50 AM

I guess the lesson learned is to ignore folks like him from the jump.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 11:50 AM

What did I say that was redeeming????? I think some of my responses were what got it pulled.

I did have some very insightful things to say on Case-Schiller though. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 11:52 AM

Snappy, while PWNING him was so fun, you're right - ignoring seems to be the way to go.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 11:53 AM

It's kinda funny though...we are damned if we do, damned if we don't. Not knocking Mr. B on this, but when we engage the loons, we all look bad. When we ignore someone's posts, we look like the "in crowd" in the high-school cafeteria that won't let others join in our reindeer games!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 11:55 AM

How 'bout those Phillies?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 11:55 AM

Guys, guys- you are all special - I'm just being extra special nice to dibs because he seemed so lost and hurt :-)

(the gillette song- that redeemed you!)

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 11:56 AM

DIBS, just noticed "Categories: Demolition" above. That's funny!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 11:57 AM

Bxgirl, don't be so nice as to give him a certain tiara. Remember, I'm still waiting!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 11:58 AM

Snappy- I guess it depends on which posts we ignore. Some people who really seem to want to join in, get welcomed. Look at jessibaby, and even randolph. Randi took a beating, true- but seemed much more in good humor than 998, who I have to say, really creeped me out.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 11:59 AM

I promise, snappy- the tiara will never go to dibs before you :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 12:00 PM

bxgrl...I have a much thicker skin than you give me credit for. :)

Please don't anyone do a rewrite or this'll get taken down.

yes, Biff, the "Demolition" caught my eye and I thought it was appropriate.

OK...MR B has probaly seen this by now

5, 4, 3, 2........

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 12:00 PM

I just got more work done in the last 15 minuted than in the preceding 4 hours!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 12:00 PM

Yikes, I was almost paralyzed without the OT! I mean, I was worried that I might actually have to leave the house! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 12:00 PM

True, bxgirl. It's easy to chat it up with newcomers like Jessi. She seemed to genuinely want to take part in the convo. 998 was there just to be rude. I hate to say that we have to 'pick and choose carefully' because that again sounds like an exclusive club or something (which the OT is not) but I don't know how else to say it.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 12:01 PM

I think ignoring a poster after the become belligerent is the way to go. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Easy enough policy, no?

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 12:02 PM

Drat! I was away for a bit & missed all the misbehavin'. Now I'm dying of curiosity.

Posted by: Arkady at April 29, 2009 12:04 PM

I guess I have to enable annonymous posting on my blog in order to talk about the Housewives and Andy interview with the Jersey girls.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 29, 2009 12:04 PM

I guess its like going to a party where everyone knows each other and you're new. Yes peple should reach out, but going in swinging and insulting is not going to make the party come to you. Other folks have joined in- we have had our discussions, our fights, our opposing points of view but most of us really want to "converse." That never seemed 998's intention, and if others like him act the same way, they don't deserve anything from other posters.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 12:06 PM

What can I tell ya guys. It was getting a bit out of hand, eventhough I did enjoy some of it. Maybe we really should just get back to discussing real estate. I just won't have much to add since I am still young and bought my first studio co-op a couple of years ago BUT I love getting a wealth of knowledge from you guys sometimes on OT and sometimes on other threads.

DIBS, where can I read in detail about Case-Shiller index? I am just sceptical about all these indexes all together. I don't think they show reality picture of real estate market.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 29, 2009 12:07 PM

It's so funny how this is Mr. B's site, he took out today's OT, and the users have just circumvented this and created a defacto OT in another area on the site. Damn! I'd say we are on a power trip here! If we were his employees, we'd all be hit with a letter in our files for insubordination!! Wild animals we are! Wild animals!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 12:11 PM

"Maybe we really should just get back to discussing real estate."

Kens, BITE YOUR TONGUE!!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 12:14 PM

Kens...I don't ever read much about it...I just comment when its up here. Real estate is not like a stock, bond or currency. There's no way to value it in terms of means, medians, etc. That is why a house on one block in Bed Stuy is worth more or less than on another one, all other things being equal. LOL

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 12:16 PM

And I'm sure he's well aware, although I think he made his point too. (Too right, snappy! We're barbarians! Hmmm.....I might give up one of my several tiaras to you for that)

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 12:16 PM

real estate? real estate? this is a blog about real estate????

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 12:17 PM

I think I should do another tribute FGVOTD to jessibaby tomorrow. She got shortchanged today through no fault of her own.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 12:18 PM

Thanks DIBS. I am looking forward to upcoming Bed Stuy and Crown Heights house tours. I never really got to check out those nabe's and that's why you'll never see me commenting on real estate values there.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 29, 2009 12:20 PM

A word to the wise...it's really the cat talk that did it.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 12:20 PM

DIBS, please lets leave "cat" and all other potentially explosive three-letter words out of it, at least for today.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 12:22 PM

Yay...my tiara is finally coming!

Yeah, and I meant them. I don't think I said anything about you that you haven't admitted yourself, Rob. But today's another day. If I offended you, I apologize.

I also suspected Dave, but then thought the use of the term "biff balls" was a clever ruse to throw me off the trail.

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 12:39 PM

ENY, the fact you thought it was clever should have been your first clue it wasn't me. :-)

ENY, stop being a curmudgeon and sing along!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 12:44 PM

dictionary.com:
Main Entry: conversate
Part of Speech: v
Definition: to socialize and chat; to CONVERSE with another

urbandictionary.com:
conversate:
While conversate is technically an accepted SYNONYM for converse, the verb tends to be favored by members of the population with IQ's that are generally well below average.

“Conversate” is what is called a “back-formation” based on the noun "conversation.” But the verb for this sort of thing is “converse.”

I really need a new job where I have constant internet access to keep up with the OT (now that it seems to have more relevance to my dating life than to, say, cats and poo and lunch).

1. Thanks, Biff! You've gone above and beyond the call of duty. Is a second job as a wingman in the works?

2. JB and I are arranging an encounter. Now go back to discussing real estate or cabinets or something, everyone.

3. On a perfectly serious note, are you out there, Montrose Morris? My US history classes are now up to the civil rights movement, and it's "Eyes on the Prize" time. I usually do a lesson on the Ocean Hill-Brownsville schools controversy, since it's a part of Brooklyn history and most students have the idea that the movement only took place in the south. You strike me as being younger than anyone who would actually have been there, but do you know people with anecdotes/ memories/stories I could pass on to my students? Come to think of it, the What/BHO might also have some stories to share...

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at April 29, 2009 1:42 PM

LOL Arkady!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 1:43 PM

Cobble, that's it! We'll go into business for ourselves. A new bar called Heathens & Hooligans! Where should we set up shop? With a name like that, WillyB may be a good nabe for it. I don't think the BH crowd will go for that and PS has enough bars already.

here you guys are.

discuss real estate? maybe if there was an actual engaging article about real estate that would spark intelligent debate we wouldn't jibber jabber in the OT so much.

But its the same thread over and over again. Open house this(this is too expensive, mutant asset bubble) hipster this, park slope stroller nazi that. oh and the case schiller crap.

And even though the OT gets an insane amount of posts, the other ones still have the same if not more then other NYC blogs get (curbed, gothamist)

"Ocean Hill-Brownsville schools controversy"?

To what event exactly are you referring? My Mom will know about it because she was a schoolteacher in Brownsville in the 1970s and early 1980s. But it doesn't ring a bell for me.

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 2:33 PM

Biff...I thought he was hot in that role but Emilio Estevez was way hot too. I like it when I can talk guy eye-candy with a straight guy.

Is this getting too racy for the Forum OT????? Would it actually be appropriate for the regular OT in this New OT World we now live in???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 2:36 PM

ENY,
From the 'Brownsville' entry on wikipedia. I had read some of this stuff before when reading about john Lindsay:

"In 1968 Brownsville was the theater for a protracted and highly contentious teacher strike.[5] The Board of Education had experimented with giving the people of the neighborhood control over the school. The new administration laid off several teachers in violation of union contract rules. The teachers were all white and mostly Jewish, and the resulting strike served to badly divide the whole city. The resulting strike dragged off and on for half a year, becoming known as one of the "Ten Plagues" of John Lindsay."

""In 1968 Brownsville was the theater for a protracted and highly contentious teacher strike."

OH YEAH! Now I remember. I specifically remember my Dad flipping out because he was tired of my Mom striking and one day he packed her into the car, drove over to the school and took her past the picket line and into the school. He was in law enforcement, so I'm sure he flashed his badge. He was a 100% "don't f w/me" type of guy. I'll have to ask my Mom about what she remembers. I'll get back to you on this.

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 2:59 PM

ENY - check Etson's note, that's the one I was referring to. Your mother probably has some interesting stories about those days. There's a good segment of the "Eyes on the Prize" documentary about it. The mostly African-American and Puerto Rican residents of Ocean Hill-Brownsville wanted local control of their schools and a less Eurocentric curriculum. IS 271 was the center of the controversy; several white teachers there were fired (depending on who you ask) when they questioned the decisions of the school board, or for being bad teachers unable to understand their students. It was one episode that caused some liberal whites to leave the civil rights movement; some of these ex-liberals became the core of modern-day neoconservatism.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at April 29, 2009 3:00 PM

Cobblehiller, you got hired? Or does this have something to do with checking out Jessie?

Posted by: mopar at April 29, 2009 3:02 PM

bhgrl, how did your gerbil die, pray tell.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 3:02 PM

man, I'm falling fast asleep here. Where's the action?

Posted by: more4less at April 29, 2009 3:03 PM

all the threads are mild today. 11217, where R U my boy?

Posted by: more4less at April 29, 2009 3:05 PM

"Cobblehiller, you got hired?"

If only mopar! No, sadly, Snappy and I were joking about opening a bar/lounge called...[I love this, nobody steal it!]....

Heathens and Hooligans!

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 3:05 PM

I'm stirring the pot over in the RH thread if that helps M4L. Or are you 'done' with them?

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 3:06 PM

sixyears- a bad situation all around. But i admit to a certain embarrassment to think liberals formed the core of neoconservatism.

For my money the most important education gives kids the basics so that they can go on to better themselves. An agenda based education locks them into a niche- and the kids pay for it. But that said, for a long time NYC schools refused to take into account the changing school populations and kids suffered from that as well.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 3:07 PM

CH, I think I need a dictionary or something avail on this site. My 500 SAT English score is really showing up big recently - too many words are too big or fancy for me

Posted by: more4less at April 29, 2009 3:12 PM

I would think a jew church is where Jews for Jesus go to pray. Us regualr jews call our houses of worship synagogue, shul, temple (reform), but not church. As I've said before about propjoe, this is a weird site to hang out on if your only purpose is to make snide or hateful comments about jews (and yes, I am specifically sidestepping that whole "semite" brouhaha of last week).

P.S. Randolph = inmate numbers guy? Randolph is posting on a bunch of threads his/her glee that the OT was toppled. Meanwhile, here we are, relatively unshaken and conducting ourselves civilly. What a shnook.

Posted by: slopefarm at April 29, 2009 3:13 PM

oops- I should have said "assume", not "presume" - especially since we were referring to propjoe.

Dave- my gerbil was obviusly not the only living extant creature who doesn't rate the name "einstein." Gerbils and cats- what was I missing?

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 3:13 PM

And your poor math score shows up in the other threads. Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 3:14 PM

"shnook."

I love that word Slopey.

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 3:15 PM

M4L,

Here let me help, which words are giving you trouble dear! [I sincerely doubt you are having trouble...was it my Jew Church comments that are giving you a headache?!?!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 3:17 PM

you old people still talk about SAT scores? I interviewed at greenwich capital a while back and the interviewer asked me what my SAT score was - i laughed in her face and asked what hers was (needless to say they passed on me)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 29, 2009 3:17 PM

Took you awhile to find us over here, Snark.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 3:18 PM

DH, I love you. That was totally the right answer!

I actually tried to submit my resume to a recruiter recently, and they wanted my SAT scores! I'm nearly 50 years old who the EF asks a 50 yr old what their SAT score was?!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 3:20 PM

DIBS, much more respectable on the math side 780.

DH, you could've been a millionaire cause greenwich capital pays super well - up until MBS' poop'd

Posted by: more4less at April 29, 2009 3:26 PM

Is snarky here DIBS, I haven't seen him since earlier in the Case Shiller thread - where I may add he got off a really good one!

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 3:26 PM

haha chiller!!!

even more absurd in your situation! even if you aced your SATs - you could have done alot of acid in the 32 years since you took them - making the results moot!

sometimes people are so stupid.

Yawwwwwwn. Must go out for a walk! See you kids later!

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 4:02 PM

Posted by: more4less at April 29, 2009 4:28 PM

bxgrl: "But i admit to a certain embarrassment to think liberals formed the core of neoconservatism"

There was an old saying on the right that "a neoconservative is a liberal mugged by reality," like the Black Power movement, Soviet aggression, and un-American hippies. Irving Kristol, father of the NY Times columnist, was a former Trotskyist. To make a vast overgeneralization, both neocons and liberals think that government can be used to reshape societies for the better (Iraq, American cities, etc.). One group is more competent at that task than the other!

ENY: Looks like we posted our comments at the same time. That's a great story about your mom and dad! Let's hear some more when you get a chance.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at April 29, 2009 4:31 PM

Maybe, but I've been called childish many times. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 29, 2009 4:32 PM

"Let's hear some more when you get a chance."

Will do...it's an interesting subject and I'm curious myself to hear my Mom's thoughts. I'll let you know. I can say that I attended garde school at P.S. 273 in ENY from 1969 to 1975 and every one of my teachers was a white Jewish woman age 25-50. Many of my classmates were Jewish kids, too. I didn't think much of it - that's just the way it was then.

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 4:39 PM

garde = grade

Perhaps I need a refresher course.

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 4:41 PM

I grew up in a great mixed neighborhood too, ENY. I think I'm the better for it.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 4:42 PM

Hello asshats! I'm baaaack! I'm gonna go get some allergy shots soon...this is ridiculous! So, what's this I hear about some people celebrating the demise of the OT today?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 4:48 PM

Never really understood where the 'neocon' term came from, or why Americans refer to social democratic / socialist ideas as 'liberal', whereas the original meaning was closer to today's 'libertarian'.

(in today's terms I would consider myself a conservative but not a neocon).

Posted by: etson at April 29, 2009 4:48 PM

I'm probably wrong but i thought "neocon" came in with the Bush administration and signified an rather tweaked and radical right form of conservatism.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 4:52 PM

Kensingtonian: Sorry I missed your post earlier - probably won't make Vox Pop tonight, although who knows? If I get enough stuff done before then, I might.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at April 29, 2009 4:57 PM

Yes, I never heard 'neocon' before the build up to the Iraq war. I never heard it used in a non-foreign policy context. Just seems like one of those talking-head terms that gets thrown around without having a clear definition.

Posted by: etson at April 29, 2009 4:58 PM

Ok, not kids. How about people. Is people ok? Does that work for you?! Sheeesh.

Snappy, We're suffering with you. Everything is just coated with a thick layer of pollen right now. It's unbelieveable. I've got sinus spray, morning pills and evening pills. What a joy.

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:09 PM

So now Kens and sixyears are arranging a date with each other?

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 5:13 PM

Cobble...maybe our new bar can have an intense hepa filter system to specially cater to the allergy sufferers among us! Think bar/clean room! Did you find any backers for our venture?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:14 PM

I always wanted to own a bar but know I would end up drinking all the profits.

Posted by: etson at April 29, 2009 5:15 PM

'Neocon' hasn't been used widely until recently, but the term has been around at least since the 1970s. The current use of the term isn't always reflective of its historical meaning.

I could be wrong here, but I'll hazard a guess as to why the American and European uses of the term 'liberal' are different. America was founded in the Enlightenment tradition, we don't have a nobility(at least not officially), and thus nearly all mainstream thinkers here would qualify as liberal in the historical European sense, so 'liberal' and 'conservative' mean something different to us. But maybe I'm completely off base, which would be traditional.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at April 29, 2009 5:16 PM

"I grew up in a great mixed neighborhood too, ENY. I think I'm the better for it."

Yep, I always considered that a god thing about NYC in general - I grew up meeting all kinds of people from everywhere. Sometimes it helps you see life from the eyes of others (if you're paying attention, that is).

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 5:16 PM

Dammit! I just made a mistake! I sent a resume to a place that I already applied to before and was ignored. Do you think that's bad?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:16 PM

if the venture is in Crown Heights North, maybe.....

Posted by: more4less at April 29, 2009 5:16 PM

I tapped DIBS, he ignored me, but that's not unusual!

Let's see, let's try etson or chicken, I think those guys have some Do-Re-Me!

C'mon guys step right up! Snappy and I have a plan here!

Heathens & Holligans! How can we lose?!

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:18 PM

Hepa filter is key, along with the smoking lounge! HA!

I wouldn't worry too much, sad to say they may not notice.

What do you say Snappy? CHN, nice. bxgrl and MM always say they need more stuff there.

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:19 PM

There was a bar called Hooligans on the Upper Upper East side when I lived there.

(on a more intellectual note - sixyears, your explanation makes a lot of sense)

Posted by: etson at April 29, 2009 5:20 PM

location - fixed
now need to fix mgt

Posted by: more4less at April 29, 2009 5:21 PM

Hey...a smoking room would be nice! And, we could offer hookahs! CHN works for me :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:22 PM

But, then again, if we open a bar called Heathens and Hooligans in CHN we might be accused by the What of race baiting! LOL

Hey!!! What's wrong with Cobble and I as management? M4L, you're cruisn' for a bruisin' buster!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:23 PM

I like Witches & Bitches myself :-). We can call ourselves the Bewitches. Since male witches are warlocks we can put whorelocks on the restroom door. Finally- we come full circle. I can supply items to carry out this theme including cats and brooms.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 5:25 PM

If that's a man-date, what do you call Rob, DH and I chugging 40s on a rooftop? Ha!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:25 PM

"Dammit! I just made a mistake! I sent a resume to a place that I already applied to before and was ignored. Do you think that's bad?"

How can it be bad? They'll just ignore you again at worst. At best, they'll give you an interview.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 5:26 PM

Yes! Yes!!! CHN!!!!!! I decorate!

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 5:27 PM

Witches & Bitches will bring out the Super Feminists and they'll burn our shit down while claiming that we've set back womens' progress about 55 years!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:28 PM

True, Biff, but I feel like a fool for sending it. I'm usually more on top of these things, but I just jumped and pressed fax. There goes my alleged attention to detail!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:29 PM

sixyears, that link was great!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 5:30 PM

I remember that man-date article sixyears! Thought the forced awkwardness was hilarious, like 'hey let's hang out but pretend we're not, just in case someone thinks we're (gasp) gay or something'.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Posted by: etson at April 29, 2009 5:31 PM

Snappy, maybe they'll admire your persistence. Don't worry about it.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 5:32 PM

"if we open a bar called Heathens and Hooligans in CHN we might be accused by the What of race baiting!"

Nah, we go that covered, I'm a Pompous White Asshat, and you're a Pompous Black Lesbian Asshat, if DIBS is "in" then we've covered a lot of bases! Hey! Bright idea: Maybe we can hook some of DIBS Mexican and Asian BFs into this, too! DIBS, do they need jobs?

M4L, I managed a cafe once when I was about 23 - so I actually have bona fides here!

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:32 PM

Isn't that what we wanted to do, snappy? Burning brings out cute firefighters ( you should see some of the women!). Besides, if we have/are witches, we curse them. So much more civilized than men- they would get pitchforks and torches.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 5:32 PM

Persistence. Yes. That's what I'll call it! Thanks Biff :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:33 PM

"I sent a resume to a place that I already applied to before and was ignored. Do you think that's bad?"

No. If they ignored you the first time, it can't hurt to bother them again. The worst they could do is continue to ignore you. I learned this during periodic periods of unemployment, when I made the same mistake (more than once, probably).

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 5:33 PM

Ok, how about this...Heathens&Hooligans for our bar section and then an after-hours club called Witches-n-Bitches? It could be a hoot!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:34 PM

Seriously, I think you have to make your own job in the New Economy. (The new, post-job economy.) If I get laid off I am thinking a food-related business....

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 29, 2009 5:36 PM

Excuse me.....EXCUSE me,,,,but aren't we neglecting the true leader of the Pompous Asshats? The legendary Montrose Morris who was defined, firstly, as an Elitist Pompous Black Asshat.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 5:36 PM

"the man date"

Good lord. Men don't "date" unless they're gay (not that there's anything wrong with that). Even most gay male "dates," I daresay, are more accurately described as "hook-ups." Am I right Dave?

Posted by: East New York at April 29, 2009 5:37 PM

M4L: And I thought you were my friend. Hmph!

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:37 PM

Si. I'm in!

"The legendary Montrose Morris who was defined, firstly, as an Elitist Pompous Black Asshat."

Right you are bxgrl, right you are! We need all the Pompous Asshats we can get! And she can design the soft furnishings! How's that!

Biff, I'll quaff a brew with you!

Can you make bar snacks mopar? I mean Pompous Asshat Hors d'oeurves?

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:42 PM

Dave, Cobble and I will draw up a formal business plan (read a plea for your financial backing) for our venture. Please be ready to be wowed into submission!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:43 PM

Rob wants a second job. We can hire him to make those pig in a blanket thingies as hors d'oeurves.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 29, 2009 5:44 PM

I'll quaff too.

cobble- I will make out her contract now so we can make sure her services are reserved. She might be too busy when the time comes, unless we nail this down now.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 5:44 PM

I hope those bar snacks are a cut above my ex's idea of elegance: Ritz crackers, sliced hot dog and a dollop of cheez whiz. Well, maybe charming in a rustic sort of way.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 29, 2009 5:46 PM

DIBS, et al, please note: We have our own lawyer! Contracts will be totally buttoned up! : D

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:46 PM

Snappy and Cobble, let's do it one night soon while I'm planning the bigger gathering. I don't want to add to our reputation for being exclusionary but I do think it would be nice to have a smaller gathering that is easier to plan for now. I can ask JB, MM, bxgrl, wasder, BRG, DIBS, THL, Amzi, and anyone else you can think of. Let's do it via email. I think I have everyone's contact info except cobble's but I'm sure one of the others has it.

This is just a guess...but I bet mopar has something fancier up her sleeve! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 5:50 PM

I say our informal get together should be comprised of all of us storming Dave's stoop with 40s and blunts! We can then worm our way into the house and steal all his stuff!

the ritz and cheez whiz I could swallow...that hot dog part...not so much!

CH, business is business - especially true when doing business with friends or family (understanding business is business helps to mitigate risk of relationship getting messed up). In order for bar to make profits in this econ, we need good mgt on dirty cheap salaries - cheaper than what you & snappy expects. If you thought seriously of worker as a mgr at one of the fast food chains then you might have the right salary expectations. If not, this aint for you.

seriously, I think CHN is primed for business. Trendy hoods are already overstaturated on a lot of stuff - bars among them.

bxgrl, They just had one of the actors speaking on NPR. I'm loving it. I wanted to get on a plane to Botswana on Sunday night and go work for her! The secretary, Mma Makutsi, is so great, the stories are so intriguing, and I love how Mma Ramotswe resolves things.

M4L, I'm UNEMPLOYED, has this fact escaped you?

I'm a very hard worker and cheap! I'll scrub floors, I'll organize everything within an inch of it's life, I am detail-oriented, great at process and I would love to be involved in a small business. I can wash dishes, tote boxes, keep orders in order, manage budgets, and maintain the inventory. I love Brooklyn to death, and would love to get to know CHN.

JB: I should be planning lessons and grading homework in solidarity with your late work hours, but I haven't emerged from laziness yet.

Cobblehiller: I know a bunch of teachers who might be perfectly willing to outsource homework and project grading.

Seriously Six?

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 6:33 PM

Six, if you hoping to be inspired by my work ethic, you might as well just head to Sycamore now....

Posted by: jessibaby at April 29, 2009 6:37 PM

Cobble: We joke about it all the time but have never seriously investigated the possibility. It might get us into hot water with our bosses if they ever found out. I'll raise the possibility at work tomorrow...but I'm not sure how many teachers would actually be willing to pay. Our bank accounts aren't exactly overflowing with money :(

Sorry, M4L set me on edge. I had parked my "humor detectors".

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 29, 2009 6:43 PM

Sycamore now? Don't tempt me, JB!

Cobble: no problem. Have you ever thought of being a paraprofessional for special education students? You're certainly vastly overqualified for the job and the salary's not great, but it's something:

Oops, ran out to dinner. Mais oui, Les Pompous Asshat Hors d'oeurves will include - in no particular order -- such delicacies as grassfed braised shortrib, organic chives, and Marlowe & Daughters duck proscuitto. They are sponsoring the next get-together, right?

"chicken, BRG????

So this is where you kids ended up playing!

I felt like I had walked out of a busy bar full of friends to get a pack of cigarettes, come back an hour later and the bar is deserted.

Tell me where you're going next time! I was almost tempted to go look for you on the Brooklynian board...
