Need new windows....
Friends,
My brownstone rental is great. The one gigantic achilles heel are the windows. Before, I put up weather stripping, it got down to 54 degrees in my apartment one night (middle of winter though). Now that its warming up, its a bit better, but the windows are still very drafty, rattle whenever its windy, and offer no noise insulation. Needless to say, these windows are single pane and probably from the early 1900s.
The landlord was trying to sell this place and couldn't and now is renting it to me.
My questions are A) is there are quick fix to stop all the weather and noise from coming in and B) how much does it cost to get some good double/triple pane windows in (and any good ideas on how to get my landlord to cover the full cost)? (( I pay $3k a month, and I'm really bothered by this ))

are you in a landmark block? if not, figure about $400 a window installed for good "replacement" windows.

8th ave b/w Lincoln and Berkely... definitely in a Landmark block. I have an alcove and the windows are some sort of curved glass. How much more you think?

The noise (rattling) solution is an easy one: wedge a matchbook (or folded piece of paper) between the window and the side frame.
The rest of the problem costs alot more.

and for the drafts, why not use that clear plastic shrink wrap film that you stick on the frame, then heat with a hairdryer?

Heavy velvet curtains, shutters, etc., also useful, as our grandparents did.

wow..curved glass...those are really beautiful windows, but would cost thousands of dollars to replace, and your landlord is under no obligation to either let you replace them, or pay a penny toward their replacement...go for the curtains, and next year move...you are ill suited for brownstone living
