"More Problems w/ Pits" Rebuttal

Here you go everyone...Look at those two viscous pitbulls attacking that poor cat!!! PLEASE!!! Pitbulls are smart, loyal, loving dogs, that are great with kids and yes...cats. Don't blame the breed, blame the owner! If you don't like pits, than don't adopt them...period! And this "racial profiling" is ridiculous! I am neither black, nor hispanic, but a white, educated female who believes in rescuing animals that others are too ignorant to understand.

great picture! Sad to say if these were my dogs, my cats would have already eaten them.

Sorry...I meant VICIOUS pitbulls! Gotta turn off this "spell check", as it clearly doesn't work!

Posted by: Misty B at April 28, 2009 1:37 PM

Yeah, the cat pretty much runs the house...

WOW that dog looks exactly like my pitbull duke :) and he lived with a cat when i lived in harlem and we never had a problem. now he lives with a 16 year old beagle and no problem! cut dog and cat! i feel like there is always pitbull baiting on this website and i dont understand how a dog attacking a cat is anyway special to brooklyn which this blog is supposedly supposed to be about!?! it's nuts. COCONUTS!

mistyb- I did notice the cat is in the dominant position. The dog I sometimes take care of is also a rescued pit bull. He's beautiful- nearly all white with a brown spot on his tail. Last Halloween his owner dressed him up as little red riding hood and sent the picture around. The expression on his face was priceless.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 28, 2009 2:12 PM

Well, I guess all the vicious pitbulls, owned by minorities must live in Brooklyn! Seems more like biased, ignorant racists than the latter!

Posted by: Misty B at April 28, 2009 2:12 PM

Good point, Rob. Since when is a dog attacking a cat newsworthy? Seems like that's been happening since time began.

Dogs have different and unique temperaments and personalities. I have a friend that has a Redbone Coonhound that he was given by a man because it had zero hunting instinct. The rest of the dogs from the litter were all placed with hunters.

To try to reduce this topic to black/white terms, especially when most comments are made by people with limited knowledge of the topic, is completely futile and frustrating. I don't know WHY I let myself get dragged in every single time.

Posted by: houseowax at April 28, 2009 2:14 PM

I beleive What made the initial racial commentary. My friend who owns the rescued pit bull is also white, and is well aware. I see quite a few people in my neighborhood with pit bulls (or boxers or staffordshites) and they are of both races. But then, the What reduces everything to race.

It isn't the dog attacking the cat that's newsworthy- it's that there are dog owners who have no business owning a dog if they can't give it the proper care and attention. And the New Yorker article explains why pit bulls seem to get the brunt of the bad press, and seemingly against the real facts.

My cousin used to raise beautiful championship boxers and yes, there were 2 she had to put down for attacking someone. That was the law- and it didn't address whether or not the person bitten aggravated the dog or not. In fact they did provoke them- but there was nothing my cousin could do.

Rob and houseowax,

This really was the whole point of my forum post! I was surprised to see such a post put up by Brownstoner, with SOOOO many comments! I also thought this blog was supposed to be about Brooklyn, not someone's opinion of a type of dog and the unfortunate situation that happened because of that particular dog's predatory instinct. The only thing from that horrible situation that pertains to Brooklyn is that it just happened to take place in Brooklyn!

I guess he saw it as local news- and made for a topic of discussion.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 28, 2009 2:34 PM

I used to think this too - that pitbulls were the same as any other dog and that it was the owners blah blah blah but 10 years of owning a dog in the Lower East Side and a decade of going to the Tompkins Square Dog Run changed my mind. Although there are some nice pits, I do think they are a more aggressive breed and far more prone to attacking and fighting. I am far more cautious around pitbulls, period. Every tragic incident I saw over this time (tragic being defined as the loss of dog and / or human blood) not only involved a pitbull but was invariably instigated by one. I think this is like the NRA fanatics that say "guns don't kill people, people kill people" - well, yeah people do kill people and if they have a gun it makes the job a lot easier, faster, more impulsive and accessible. Pitbulls are dangerous and so are handguns. I have no problem with people owning either as long as they are responsible...

You're probably right bxgrl, I better be careful walking my dogs late on garbage night. If they catch a rat, I may become a "local news" and then who knows...even PETA may get involved!!! ;)

sam in a sense you are right. honestly i dont think id ever pet a random pitbull that i didnt know. tho i guess one shouldnt do that to any dog, tho some dogs you just know will be fine.

SamHall,

Point taken and agreed, responsibility is key. I've owned five pitbulls and had no issues with any of them, but I have also seen many dangerous pitbulls, that I myself would be afraid of and would not want to see roaming off a leash. It is all about responsibility.

Amen! Thank you.

those don't look like pit bulls.

Posted by: new2hood at April 28, 2009 3:52 PM

Well new2hood, they probably don't look like pitbulls to you because I don't wrap tow chains around their necks and make them run the tread mill to pump up. They certainly aren't poodles!

Is that a Burmese??? We had a Burmese with another tabby. Both are gone now.

Oh my god, that photo just made my day! Awwwwwwww.....

Posted by: Brownstonerlogin at April 29, 2009 9:39 AM

nice pet family, love that cat's coat!

now that they're banning pits and other big dogs from the projects, i suspect the local shelters will see a big influx. sucks.

Posted by: Jimmy Legs at April 29, 2009 12:28 PM

Yes Dave, that was my Burmese, Saba. Recently passed at the ripe old age of 19! That little six pound, declawed cat was the leader of the pack!

Thanks Jimmy! She was beautiful and her twin brother was too(he passed at 17). Banning pits in the projects is good, it will keep the thugs from owning them. Only problem is the shelters will be swarmed and a lot of those dogs won't be able to be placed and simply won't make it. Truly sad.

Ours died at 19 as well.
