ISO mason & electric
Hi all
I have a little extension/attachment to my house in the backyard. The previous owner built it, and we use it as a laundry room, there are cabinets on the wall, as well as pipes in the wall. Turns out that about 6 inches of this structure extends into my neighbors yard, and he would like his space back. So basically I guess I'm looking for someone that is capable of breaking down the wall, dealing w/ any pipe or cabinet adjustment, and putting the wall back up minus the six inches. I'm hoping this is not a major job, and am cautiously optimistic I can get this done at a reasonable sum. Does any one have any suggestions? Is this a two trade job, do I need a mason guy and a plumber? In addition there's a drain pipe(the long one that extends from roof to ground) that needs to be relocated. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Marie

How long has the extension been there? Its my understanding that if its been there for a long while (10 years or so) and your neighbor never complained about it before then he/she may not be able to force you to remove it. I don't know for sure, and have heard this only through other similar posts on this blog before, but it is worth looking into it. You may at least be able to negotiate with your neighbor to share some of the costs.

The extension has been there over fifteen years! . Thanks for your suggestion, maybe I need to research a little more before I take any action.

Hello again. The issue that I reference above is called "adverse posession." Or something similar. You may find information about it from older posts here.

You do not have to remove. Could cause bad will with your neighbor, but he cannot force you to do anything. If it has been that way for 15 years it belongs to you. Law is on your side.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my posting. Initially when my neighbor presented me with this I assumed I had to do it. As I started getting estimates I realized how very expensive this would be. I think I'll consult w/ a real estate lawyer and present to my neighbor. The feedback I received here was very helpful. Thanks!

I don't know anything about your specific issues, but if you're looking for a mason, you should try Nick at Transcend Construction. Do a forum search here and you'll find countless reviews-all stellar. Don't have his phone number on me, but he's got a website, so you can google him.
