Fight Sanitation NY
I just received a ticket in the mail for having a piece of wood in a cardboard box of paper recyclables. The building is in the bronx very busy street so there is a problem of people throwing garbage anywhere. I am planning on going to the hearing and making a defense on the busy street and hoping to reduce the ticket from $100 hearing. I have a plan to put surveillance cameras in each home to prove that the ticket is not just.

Welcome to NYC. I got a ticket for not shoveling my walk quickly enough on Christmas day (ok, maybe it was the day after...), and another because my paper boxes weren't tied together well enough. You sure its worth calling in the 81st Airborne for this? I'll bet that the $100 ticket costs less than a surveillance camera, and you were talking "cameraS". What would you do with the footage anyway? Don't think the cops are going to arrest whoever dumped some wood in your recycling. Also, how much would you have to pay yourself to take a half day off to contest the ticket? (Don't get a parking ticket if you drive to the hearing....) You can see where I'm going with this......By all means go and assert your rights as a citizen, but the expense of doing so makes it in your best interest to pay it and go have a couple of beers instead....

The one time I got a Sanitation ticket I successfully contested it by mail, with the charge being dismissed. IMO there's no need to go in person.

If you go that route with the cameras to challenge this in court, please post back on Brownstoner and tell everyone how that turned out. It's an interesting approach.

I was so angry once with one of those tickets that I went and contested it (a bit of a long story, but I was able to prove that it was a random passerby that littered our sidewalk and that we were all out of the country at the time of the alleged incident). I kid you not - I got a written decision from that kangaroo court saying that I am responsible for keeping my sidewalk clean even when I am not around.... That's the last time I am contesting a ticket.
