excerpt from my tenant's letter:
First, about cooking. We have tried our very best to not let the
smells of our food go up. This has meant opening our doors and windows
on the coldest of days in winters and the hottest of days in summers
as well. Very often, when it is too cold to open the windows we let
the smells and smoke stay in which means we have to take off the smoke
alarm and end up enduring the smells which get into everything
including our clothes and technical equipment (which are very
sensitive and expensive).
The windows are not easy to open and close and during most of the
months of the year they have to remain insulated. Sometimes when they
are opened from the top I am unable to close them properly because of
my back problem. So in all fairness, the only solution we have
sometimes is to just open the corridor door and our back door. We
understand that this aggravates you, but we don’t enjoy it either
because of the following reasons:
- We are forced to eat out sometimes because it is either cold or too
hot to open the windows in order to cook. This means we are spending
more money out of our pocket and not even eating healthy.
- We are forced to expose our daughter to the extreme fluctuations of
cold and heat and wind in order to ventilate the house. She caught a
cold again from this Saturday’s ventilation.
- We are forced to take off the smoke alarm which is a dangerous
situation both for you and us.
- We end up using more electricity to cool the house in summers once a
fully air-conditioned house is opened for ventilation and lose the
precious heat in winters.

What are they cooking??? More importantly, for how many???

I'm with dibs- what can they possibly mean? Everyone cooks- why is their cooking such a big deal?
Most ridiculous line :"We are forced to eat out sometimes because it is either cold or too
hot to open the windows in order to cook. This means we are spending more money out of our pocket and not even eating healthy."
Sounds like someone angling for a rent discount, and creating a problem in order to do it.

Should probably hear second, third and forth before coming to any judgments...

oh brother. Did you tell them that the smells from their cooking were bothering you? Have you told them you won't be renewing the lease as you have other uses for the apartment?
The tone sounds like some commercial tenants I recently had. Everything, every little thing was a huge deal. They would try to order me around to make repairs. They thought dust on the security system was mold. They had me really worried about the condition of my store. Now I have a new tenant and not a peep except to tell me they loved the place about a month after they moved in.

pls see OPs previous post for background

If they were my tenants they would so NOT be renewed. With some people, no amount of rent is worth putting up with them.

Are they bad cooks, or do you just complain a lot about their cooking?

Good point denton.

OK, I have a hunch. Are they Chinese and are they cooking with a wok? They may just have different expectations. I have seen people rig up ducts that go out the window permanently. It's easy to do.
And while I realize ventilation is not usual in New York, and I am not defending them, nonetheless I have to chime in and say it's odd that ovens are not required to be ventilated here. It does not seem healthy. I'm talking about the oven, not the stove top. I can feel the fumes when I cook. And yes, I open the window.

Whether ovens need venting or not is determined by the manufacturer - some models must be vented, many don't need it.

I'm with mopar... Are they Chinese or Indian? I had Chinese living beneath me and Indian living above and every time either cooked, the smell literally came up through the floor/ceiling and was bad. It made us have to go out to eat to avoid the smell! Anyway, what could they possibly be cooking that needs to have every window open for ventilation??? Sounds like someone who's trying to get new windows. Suggest a window ventilation fan, it's only $49!

They are Indian, and the stove is 6 inches from a sliding glass door. I am so not putting in a vent, the lease was up last year and I let them rent month to month.
In 4 years I have complained about the cooking smells maybe 6 times (they open the door to the hallway when they cook, so they don't have to endure the smell, oh and get sick, and so their computer doesn't get ruined etc...)
At the least, I got a good laugh out of this saga...

Get them out. My kitchen has the same problem but if I open the glass door for 1-2 minutes I get fresh air and the smell out. I do this on freezing days, no big deal, it is only a minute. I can't imagine it is costing much energy, what cheapskates! Goodbye!
