bamboo front fence
Hi. My house is sticking out compared to others and technically I can fence off 4' in front of the house. I wanted to put something there but before choosing ubiquitous iron fence I though about the fence made out of bamboo. You know the one you can find in old Japanese parks where bamboo is tied with black ropes.
I have tried to see how it would look like in Photoshop, but obviously my skills not that great.
Note that the house has a light brick facade and square contours. So japanese style should fit better then the iron fance (IMO).
Do you think this would look any atractive?
Would community board get all in arms about it? (the house is not a landmark). Would it attract too much of attention?
Here are few other examples of bamboo fences:

Oh, you are a creative one. My feeling is the bamboo fence is a country look, and this is a city house. Maybe a bamboo fence would look better in the back yard. Have you looked into historic black iron fences for the front? Maybe it's possible to get a selvage old one, or a reproduction. Good luck!

Most curiously, just as I changed pages, I noticed the google ad says:
"old-world of wrough iron
fences, railings, gates, balconies we specialize in wrought iron forging
www.ironhomeandgarden.com"
How funny! Too bad they can't spell wrought iron.

Yeah. I've noticed that typo for weeks. I often wonder how much traffic advertisers on this site get from us. I try to rationalize that if you're looking for an ironmonger his spelling doesn't really matter - on the other hand, if he pays so little attention to detail that might be a problem.

You also have the option of painting an iron fence gray, brown, beige, or any color you like to match or contrast with your building.

Pretty house, btw.

No offense, but the bamboo doesn't seem like it would go with your facade. Maybe you could look into some sort of period ironwork that isn't as heavy looking as the typical styles used. With the bamboo you could also risk having kids(or someone who's just mean and disturbed) damaging it for fun. If you're so attached to the bamboo, put it in your garden and create your own zen paradise!

that just looks...silly

Another vote for bamboo looking out of place with your house. Plus, it just won't hold up.

Beautiful home but nix the idea of the bamboo. Iron would be much more appropriate. Just don't use stainless steel!

Firstofall, thanks for response and for complements on the house.
I still kind of curious how it will look like. I spent a lot of time in Japan and I always wanted to have something like this. It looks very nice and peaceful especially when it is covered with snow.
So maybe I can waste a few dollars and get a few bamboo sticks. I will put flower boxes in front of the house and attach a low fance on it. If I do not like it - I will go with iron fence.

I'd save the bamboo for use in a garden in the backyard.

the bamboo looks really awful

bobjohn, since bamboo is cheap and you have something else you can recycle it into then there's no harm in trying - but it will look rubbish. Sorry!

ok, I will not do. But just because I go so much of bad rap about it. :)

good for the back yard, not very attractive out front.

I know its hard to have your house look like everything else in Brooklyn, but that is part of the charm of Brooklyn....why not have a more modern-style iron fence, which fits with the building and the neighborhood but is not so old-fashioned? and then use the bamboo as an accent, like a trellis for a climbing vine to soften it up.

Try it, no harm, no foul. I like the blocks where people have added their personal touches myself.

In Japan, you would be the sticking-up-nail that would be hammered down. Traditional Japanese design considerations include: light, shadow, balance, appropriate and harmonious use of materials, restrained ornamentation, acute awareness of whether a context demands formality or informality. Breaking from the diplomacy of Japanese communication: save the bamboo fence for your garden.
