synlawn or similar?
Anyone have any experience with these new LEED-certified artificial grass products? We have 2 8'x10' sections of a shady rowhouse backyard that I'd like to grow grass but I don't think it will work, given the shade and the 2 little kids that will abuse it. Considering this stuff as an alternative to give the kids a place to roll around outside...but I tend to be wary of artificial anything. Seems to have a bit of a following in NYC, this stuff, and it doesn't need water, which I like. Anybody have a comment?

I'm not exactly familiar with that product, but if it is the same synthetic lawn that I've seen elsewhere with the "dirt" made from ground-up tires, I can tell you to be prepared to have tiny little black rubber dots everywhere in your house.
My son plays soccer on that stuff and we have to strip him down outside before he goes into the house. It even gets in his hair and ears.
Great to play on, but a nightmare in the home.

There are a lot of ground covers that can take foot traffic and don't need watering or other maintenance, and are real plants, so they are actually doing some CO2 breathing instead of just being "LEED certified".
I mean, I think it's great to make stuff out of garbage. But why not just plant something?
