Shout out to Master Plumber!

Just want to thank Brownstoner for being a fabulous resource--and Master Plumber for restoring quiet nights in my home. I found an archived discussion about noisy pipes and called John at Gateway Plumbing and Heating (aka masterplvmber). After 8 reasonably quiet winters, our hot water heating system started making an unbearable amount of noise--the kind that makes you insane in the middle of the night. Our regular plumber sent a guy who spent 5 minutes, insisted I had a steam system, tracked snow all through my house, shrugged and said: "Pipes make noise" and collected $100 from me. The next week, I emailed John. He came himself the next day, figured out the problem (pipe support in the basement had broken causing movement in the line going through my bedroom--hence, the noise). His guys fixed the problem on the first try and charged me less than the estimate. That has NEVER happened in my years of maintaining a brownstone. We've made it through several very cold stretches since the work was done and (knock wood) all is quiet. THANKS!

I'm currently a renter, but I am confident from all of masterplumber's postings that he knows his stuff and isnt evil.

By math, that puts him in the top 10% of contractors....

I've learned a lot from Gateway's Master Plumber. I look forward to the day that he'll expand Gateway's service area to include Victorian Flatbush. Meanwhile I'll just keep reading his posts and waiting.

Master Plumber is one of the best things about Brownstoner. If only all contractors were like him we wouldn't need a site like this.

What does he charge by the hour?

If all he had to do was strap a pipe to the ceiling, what were you expecting to pay? Do you expect every plumber to actually lie to you?

My experience with reputable licensed plumbing companies is that you usually get good service, but you pay up the nose for it.

So far I've read no bad comments about Master Plumber, but I've never used him myself.
